SSR Ignition Switch Removal/Install Directions
MS Word doc only......I tried to convert to Adobe but since it was received in an e-mail format some codes were damaged I am only able to offer it to you in MS Word. Added to the original GM doc are the easy Install/Removal directions that Maui Mike helped to convert to an e-mailing file for our fanatic members.
Print it off for your records.....keep it in your SSR ya never know when you will need it

Thanks for posting. I suggest having a spare ignition switch on board. They are not expensive. Call one of the supporting vendors.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery at the jump box.
2. Tilt the steering wheel all the way up, and turn the ignition key to the "run" position.
3. Remove the tilt lever by pulling straight out on it.
4. Remove two (2) # 25 torx bolts from the underside of the bottom shift console cover.
5. Pull the console cover down and then forward. Be careful not to damage the alignment tabs.
6. Remove the ignition switch by pulling the black plastic keeper toward the front of the vehicle. The keeper looks like a "J". Pull down on the switch, you might need to jiggle it. It should fall out of the hole.
7. Disconnect the ignition wire connector plug from the switch.
REPLACEMENT
1. Compare the old switch to the new one, make sure the white plastic gear in the new switch is in the same position as the old one.
2. Connect the ignition wire plug to the new switch.
3. Push the new switch up into the hole the old switch was in, make sure it is in all the way. It will not move when it's properly positioned.
4. Replace the shift console cover. Make sure you align the tabs in the front of the cover with the upper cover or it won't fit snugly. If it does not fit together tightly, it's either in wrong or you have damaged one or more of the tabs.
5. Replace the tilt lever.
6. Turn the key to the "off" position.
7. Re-connect the battery cable.

Hey!! I resemble that remark. Good to know I wasn't the only one to make this mistake.

And, do the X-man fix - disconnect the battery at the jump box, wait ten minutes and reconnect. This procedure solves a lot of window / radio / roof cycle / starting problems.

No disrespect intended HRG
The way I did it is this:

REPLACEMENT

Hope this helps.....I know about the damage to the tabs on the shift console cover because I tried to pry it down, not realizing it was held in place by the torx bolts.

I've listened to all the advise about the switch and have replaced mine but still have the starting problem. It ALWAYS starts eventually. I don't ever have to charge or jump the battery. Sometimes I come back 5 minutes later and it starts right up. Other times I recycle the windows and or open the door and it starts? Sometimes it will sit for a week or two in sub freezing weather and it starts immediately. Other times if it sits overnight in 50 degree weather it won't start? And it never fails to start during trips around town, somtimes 8 0r 10 times a day. So I don't beleive it's the ignition switch but sure am at a loss as to what it is. Are there any other ideas out there. Love my SSR but a bit frustrated and worried that one of these times it won't START????????????
Hi,
I've been having the same problem with my 04. I changed the ignition switch, but i still have the occasional starting problems. Have you been able to diagnose your starting problem?

Check Ground! I met someone at our Fantasy of Flight Rally on Saturday and he said he had a lot of problems with starting. Checked ground, grounded battery in several places and has not had a problem sense.
Just worth checking.

If you're having a "cranking" problem, have the battery checked for weak or dead cell(s). Never assume that a newer battery cannot have a dead or weak cell.
It's always a good idea to check all connections (positive and negative) to make sure they're tight and clean.
If your battery checks out good and your cables and connections are clean and tight and you're still having a cranking problem, or if the battery seems like it is not holding a charge, the next step is to have your alternator output checked.
It's not usually common in newer vehicles but cables do go bad (internally) even though they look fine on the outside.
Finally, IMHO, if you've got 5 years service out of your OEM battery.....it's time to buy a new battery!!
I replaced the battery in my '04 last year with less than 10,000 miles.
If you just have to get that "last mile" out of your old battery, think about where you may be when that happens.
My "beater car" is an '06 Pontiac Vibe with 111,000 miles on it and when I was having it serviced this week the dealer checked the battery and yep, it had a dead cell. I didn't get 5 years out of the battery but I did get 110,000+ and I'm not walking or sitting on the side of the road stranded.

Reason: ed
I cleaned the ground wire ends and tightened the 2 bolts attaching the two ground wires (one grounds the chassis and one grounds the body) from the negative battery cable. I also cleaned the ground and positive connections at the battery.
I had previously replaced the original battery and the ignition switch.
Since then, I have not had any of the intermitant ocasional starting problems.
I have downloaded the instructions to replace my ignition switch. I see three holes under the steering column where I think at least two of them should have the torx bolts. mentioned. When I look up into the holes or push up a torx bit, there are no bolts. What am I doing wrong here? HELP!
