I am seeing numerious '05 SSR's for sale by wholesallers that were owned by GM and have from 5K to 7K miles on them. Apparently there were never titled to any private owner and were promotional vehicles. They seem to have every option available on them. Does anyone have any knowledge about the history on these? Would they be a good buy?

2005 SlingShot Yellow GM Program
Mine is one of those GM Program vehicles. It only had 6500 miles on it, loaded with accessories, and otherwise in almost mint condition. The sticker was $49,990.00. I got it for $32,500.00. I feel like it was a darned good deal.
When we did the Born on Date it came up like this for the order number:
I also bought one: a 2004 with 4000 miles in May of 2006 that had an in-service date of 10-05 which still gave me plenty of factory warranty. No dings or flaws. Looked like a brand-new 06. The extra horsepower on the 05 & 06 models was not important to me.
I paid $27,500 out the door. I thought it was a good deal.
My SSR: "Babe" '06 Pacific Blue/Chrome/6pd #22407, born 10/14/'05, and #21393, died 2/16/'07.
Also an Ex-Show Car Owner
It wasn't in the dealer inventory as new, but was sold as such. Built on 10/14/05, warranty started in Nov. 05, when delivered to Western Region Office in Detroit. Found it's way to Arizona, where I saved 4 grand on an '06 Pacific Blue manual/chrome/everything with only 91 miles. I was happy.
I picked up an '06 Pac Blue 6 speed (all options but chrome package) GM dealer car in Illinois with 405 miles on it, delivered to Phoenix for $ 38K in December.
Looking at the prices now, I'd say it was a great deal. I could'nt be happier with it!

I was told by the dealer (other than the purchasing dealer, who played dumb) at these show cars (trucks) were in service as division demoes, on the floor at auto shows, and at dealer BBQs a display vehicles, etc.

Some of these Trucks were auto show units, some were traveling around the country as ride N drive units some could be GM Company cars as well. In some cases they built of some these Trucks to keep the line operating then re sold them as used through the GM dealer Auctions. My Dealer once had a 2006 on the used car lot with 125 miles on it as a "used GM pre owned". It was hardly used with 125 miles on the clock.
Sound like what used to be called PEP cars to me. GM executives drive them till they hit a certain mileage then are sold to employees if not sold to employees then to the public. Not at all special but available at a discounted used car.
They are GM Executive demos. That is why the warranty starts on a cretain date. Once it is put into demo service the warranty starts. They should be pretty clean and most probably have had the kinks worked out. If they have a problem they have it serviced. Most of the time if you buy a demo you save$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I've been going for the last several years to something G.M. calls "Auto Show in Motion". It's a great show that G.M. takes from town to town. They let you drive all their vehicles with no questions ask and no pressure to buy. They even supply other manufacture vehicles that you can drive too, to compare. They've always had about 20 SSRs at these shows. So, be careful, some of your SSR's that have 2000 miles on them, might have had 100's of drivers for the 1/4 mile track they set up. They also do the same thing with the corvettes and really encourage you to drive it hard. I'm sure they are still great trucks...and covered under warranty. Just my .02 worth.

I also saw several SSRs at the Auto Show in Motion(s) that I've attended - they drove'em hard at the track they set up at Mile High. Suffice it to say the suspensions on those vehicles have had a full workout. I'm certain that just a handful of the program vehicles were in the Auto Show, and even those were very well maintained. I wouldn't worry too much - just know that not all the program cars were driven only on Sunday to church by the mother of an unnamed GM exec.
I got my 05 aqua blur 6-spd from the GM auction program with 5600 miles back in December. I was very excited to be able to get a 47,500 msrp vehicle for 31,600! Odometer now shows 13,600 and is holding up just fine. I've noticed on this site the consistant best deals seem to come from this type of purchase.

Our '06 6-speed had 7K miles for 32K (bought it back in Feb.) Awfully good tread on the tires and almost no wear and tear at all, everything looked brand new, no major issues as of yet.....

When I test drove it, while it was on the Ebay auction, it had 20+ miles and when I returned it had 30+ miles. I was not the high bidder, but the high bidder called me, stating he was not interested in paying the freight charges to the State of Washington. So, I took over his contract. Simply stated, I paid $33,315.00 plus tax, license, doc charges for a Stickered $48,655.00 SSR Aqua blur, six speed, 6.0 L, last August. I took a rode trip today to see Ernie at Heritage Chevrolet, Auburn, Illinois and stop by a local Car Show in Pawnee, Illinois. I love, love driving the SSR, and have not had enough time to enjoy it of late. Lots of Road Trips for money with my 04 F350 Ford Harley, non dually, one ton.
Anyway, this is the way I looked at it. Chevrolet would have the Auto Show in Motion vehicles in good working order, as they were trying inducee buyers to buy. I had to have my SSR Wet sanded to restore a smooth finish, a non-anal person it would have made no difference. To this point, I am a happy camper with my purchase, 9 months and about 1,800 miles later. In case anyone is looking for a SSR deal. Ernie has sold 52 SSR's to date, purchased about 16 at end of product of the SSR from Chevrolet on the Smart Auction, and has about 8 left, 04 to a final product numbered 06, it seemed like all colors were there. The numbered final production unit was Silver/Black, chrome package, six speed. Good Luck to All.
PEP car program: I bought a Blur 05 with 4400 miles on it, complete full package and all chrome. Perfect condition and I would do it again. By the way, I may have info. on a red SSR which is now in the fleet and being driven by a GM sales employee. This vehicle will be put into the PEP program in approx. 2000 miles. It had 1600 miles around 8/10/06. If you qualify I would suggest you submit online request. I even have last six of the vin!

I've also got one of the GM Promo 2005 SSR's
It listed out at over $53,000 and I purchased it for $34,500 with 782 miles on it and it came completely loaded and in excellent condition. I purchased it on eBay from a Chevy Dealer in Liberty MO, just outside of Kansas. The dealer was great to work with and made all the arrangements to ship it right to my driveway. That little trip cost an additional $1,000 but was sure worth it - Liberty, MO to Hampstead, NH in one week. One of the longest weeks in my life... I'd do it again in a flash !
My 05 was titled by GM also. It stickerd for 51,030.00. I got it for 32,500 with 4k miles on it. It was prbly an executive vehicle and then sold at auction. These GM titled SSR's are a great deal in my book. Anytime you can save 18k is a great deal!
