Starting by It Self OK, What's This All About Now...?

I was at Target this evening. I get into my Truck turn the key it starts but dies, THEN all by itself without my hand on the key it just starts cranking on its own and starts by itself.. .. What is that all about?? For a second I was in disbelief. Do I need to re name her Christine???

The start cycle is computer controlled. You only need close the contact and the truck will start, unlike what we've been used to, i.e. hold the ignition in the start position until it, well, starts. It's like a "start" button on the higher end cars. Next time you start your SSR, just turn the key to start and immediately let it go. It will crank and start up even without your hand on the key.

Just observed info here, nothing I know for sure engineering wise.

Yeah, I noticed it a month or so after taking delivery. Pretty cool.

Unless this is something unique to our VIN sequence or a defect. Then it would suck.

In the manual, it states that you may occasionally notice the starter stays engaged even after the engine starts to fire. This is stated to be normal. All part of this program I guess.

What'll happen when something like the fuel pressure regulator goes south (happens on the full size trucks all the time)? It'll probably keep cranking until it starts, which could be 10-20 seconds.

Then again, you might just need a new ignition switch.

I noticed that shortly after getting mine, also. The engineering rep that I spoke with at Lansing referred to it as the "bump start" feature in the software program in the computer. Intentional, at any rate.

A little scary....

....sometimes all this computer control is a little scary
Soon I suspect the General will have control much like Bill Gates, and every time you start the car they will bill you a royalty fee
Luckly and thankfully the SSR don't have onstar!!!

Starting "by itself?"

I tried this on our 04 (s/n 6166) and it did not work. Mine must be "olf fashoned".
