Red face Sweet and simple Satellite radio ?

One question. Does my 2004 with the upgraded Bose sound system have plug and play satellite, ie, XM or Sirius, components?

I thank you for your input.
See you in Flagstaff, IF, I can listen across 2000 miles to my fave station.
BPM.

I would say "Define Plug&Play"

There are adapters available that will allow you to plug in the receiver, but as far as I know you still need to take the dash apart to put them in.

Unless there have been major improvements over the last five years, BlueSteak . . . you are absolutely correct.

When I had SIRIUS professionally added to The Doophus . . . a separate tuner and antenna were plugged into the rear of the OEM radio. Once that was done, the system is completely integrated, including the Steering Wheel Controls and the Dash Display.

Removing and replacing the dash was about 90% of the labor but it was definitely worth every penny.

Sirius

I installed the SIRIUS SIR-GM1. Purchased it on the Internet. If you use this unit, the wiring harness has 3 plugs, you use 2 of the 3, tape over the third. It plugs into the back of the radio on the opposite side from the OEM radio plug. It also requires that you cut a small piece of plastic so that the "new" plug will fit when you slide the radio back in.

Of course all of this occurs after you remove the front of the dash, which requires that you either pull it over the air bag, or remove the airbag. I recommend that you use Mike in AZ's method and remove the airbag. It is vexing to remove, but after you put it back in, you do not put the top studs back in, only the two bottom, which are easy, so that you can remove easily the next time. I did it this way because I did not want to cut on the dash tabs, or possibly damage the plastic of the dash, very hard to purchase.

If after all of this, you still want to put one in, go the "SEARCH" on this forum, type in Sirus Install and you will find Threads like this:

GM-1 SIR Install

Scooter,

The OEM 24 pin connector stays in the radio, one end of the "T Harness" goes to the 12 pin connection on the bottom left side of the back of the radio, one end goes to the GM-1, and the the grey?end of the "T Harness" is unused,(I just taped the end of the connector). You will have to cut the plastic behind the radio to allow the 12 pin connector room to slide the radio in. I installed the GM-1 Module by just duct taping (of course) it to the bracket just above the radio.
The yellow wire on the "T Harness is connected to a battery source. If you don't have this connected to the battery the radio may NOT retain the button preset settings for your favorite Sirius stations.

All of the steering wheel controls work. You will have AM, FM1, FM2, SR1,SR2 by tapping the BAND Button.

Some of the guys have installed the antenna on the bracket in the center of the dash area just before the windshield so that is not visible under the top dash, and report good reception. I was a little leery of that, some have reported that reception will vary according to where you are, some parts of the US get better reception with the placement because of the angle to the satellite. The antenna is a mini, I put mine beside the vent on the right side of center just behind the windshield trim, (see picture)

Doophus, that was the gist of my question: does the OEM radio have the auxillary inputs for the tuner and antenna? I do understand the dash would have to be dismantled to connect the new components. By 'plug and play', I was wanting to know if the radio was satellite 'ready'. I have gotten so many different answers from so many different sources, I just wasn't really sure what would be involved in the upgrade!

Thankfully, Carl, I had mine installed by a professional, however, I did watch the entire process which took a few hours.

According to my paperwork there were only three parts required . . . a SIRIUS Tuner by Kenwood (model KTC-SR902), a SIRIUS Antenna and a SoundGate Kenwood to General Motors Multi-Function Interface (model KNGM1). Everything, including the antenna, is completely out of sight and fully integrated and controlled by the OEM radio including the Steering Wheel Buttons.

I do not remember any wire splicing so I would imagine it was "plug and play" but remember . . . it was over five years ago.

Good Luck and I hope all this makes sense but if not . . . I'LL TRY AGAIN.

Plug & play

There is a 12 pin connector on the back of the radio to accept a XM or SIRUIS radio tuner. The antenna plugs into the tuner. As I said I the previous reply, if you use the GM-1,(Sirius SIR-GM 1 Satelite Radio Tuner for 2003-up GMs) nothing else needs to be purchased, all the steering wheel controls work, you select AM, FM, SR1, SR2 by pressing the Band Button. It comes with the wiring harness, plugs and the antenna. I purchased my from mine on E-Bay from davey_28. ie Ken Haley,6082 Dyane Drive Olive branch, MS 38654. Name Brand Overstocks items - Get great deals on DVDs Movies, Non Fiction items on eBay Stores!. I paid $59.95 plus 4.20 tax because I was instate. Siruis has a option of lifetime use for $500, no monthly payments and you can replace the radio up to 3 times for a cost of I think $50.
