Taking roof apart
I am planning on having my Silver two toned. The painters I spoke to are all trying to convince me to paint the bottom color. I think they are all afraid of removing the top panels.
I want the top color painted along with the interior trim.
Has anyone taken the roof panels apart yet?
I was wondering how hard it would be to remove them for painting.
I also saw a post about removing the interior waterfall.
What about the trim that goes around the top of the dashboard?

I know when I wanted to paint my slingshot yellow SSR black up top, no local paint shop would touch it for under 4 grand because of the top and all the other parts that would need to be removed to be painted correctly. Most all of themsaid the whole truck would have to be dismantled, body-wise, to paint it correctly...

I don't think you need to remove the top to have it painted. My understand is you'll need to remove the weatherstriping between each roof panels. Waterfall is real easy to remove.
Look at post #1 on this link. I was told the dealer did the paint job on that one & it a good looking one. 05 dark grey over silver
What color are you planning on? I would love to paint mine as shown on above link.

When I painted the top half of mine black I didn't want to mess with the roof disasembly so I had them just tape the gaskets back. Came out quite good. It may not please Foose but I am really happy with it. I took out the interior pieces myself. Took maybe an hour in and an hour to replace. The door sills can be separated from the door panals also after you take off the inner panels.
Another thing you might want to consider is to paint the top section and interior, but leave the the roof the origional color. I have seen a few like that and it looks pretty good. If you don't like it you could always do the roof later.

I got a price on painting the bottom color and they are talking $4K. They would not give me a price on the top color change because of the labor involved on the top removal.
This is color choice #1 but I still have a couple of other ideas that I have to look at first. I am having my daughter change some pictures in PhotoShop.

The top doesn't have to come off
The best way for them to paint it is to remove the rear tonneau cover, rear Hatch for the roof stowage, Front corner covers, and the hood. For the roof, remove the weatherstrips and close the roof to the point of just touching the front, but not yet latched. With the rear hatch panel removed it is very easyt to paint he entire roof while still on the vehicle.
If you're painting the interior parts the are easily removed also fo painting separately. The upper rear piece just lifts up with light pressure. The lower console piece will have two phillips screws at the rear and one in the center storage area. It also helps to remove the lid. Remove the shifter handle (via a #10 torx bit),then the silver (or chrome) shifter panel. It also liftd up with steady pressure.
The front trim will require removal of the visors and "A" pillar trim first to gain room to remove the front upper dash pieces (which will also lift out with steady pressure).
The upper door trim will also come off . First remove the door panels (door lock button, interior handle bezel , then a 10 mm bolt near the door handle, remove the silver (or chrome) trim piece using light pressure away from the door, remove two more 10 mm bolts. The door panel is now ready to remove by using steady pressure pulling away from the door frame. One it's removed, lay it on something soft and remove aprox. 10 #15 torx screws.
Don't forget to take the mirrors off too.
Now you're ready to Mask off, scuff and paint.
Good luck.
Need any more info PM me, and I'll get it to you when I can.
