I have been reading about the 160 thermostat for the corvette 5.3L I have and o3 in L.V. and I want to change the stat can anyone help
all depends on type of housing is on your eng, I found one on internet, don't have inter addr. name of engine builder is Katec inc in clinton township Mi.phone586 791 4120. my part#was [slp100228] eng temp runs about 180. in trafic or climbing hills, I turn on the after mrkt fan. Definatly replace thethermostat to the 160 stat, Idiscribed my housing , he sent me pics for 5,3 on "e mail"I installed mine in oct of 05, no regrets,Joe myers,my email addr rockpilegarage@tularosa.net
a 160 degeee stat will not run at 160,it opens at 160, eng will run approx 15-20 degrees hotter.the stock fan relay[ low ]does not activate untill eng temp is 225degrees, much too warm, not much of a span before eng is exreemly hot.especially this eng,or even almn heads.joe myers, rockpile garage,
I'm running a 03 5.3L SSR with a supecharger, cam and headers.I had it custom tuned at Tonys' Corvette in Gaithersburg Md.
I asked Keith Green about changing the thermostat and he said that the Corvettes love them. So' he turned me on to one which I installed. He re-set the on/off fan temps during the tune process and i have absolutely no problems with the colder unit.My SSR runs at 160 degrees all the time, which suprized me,but its true,It really makes a difference.I'm pushin 525HP and even at 100+mph the damned thing runs at 160.On a 95+ degree day she runs cool.In real heavy stop and go traffic, it will creep up a bit but goes right back down when I'm rolling again.
Iv'e got to say that I had serious doubts, reading all the posts about guys installing bigger fans and radiators and such, but I'm a believer. Best $40.00 I have spent
Now I don't know if its' a good idea on a completely stock motor, but with the mods that I have,so far it's been a good thing.
