Most every late model vehicle has a gas tank vent recovery system that vents fumes to the system via a rubber hose from the tank. Part of the enviroments stuff. If it comes off or gets a leak in the hose the computer thinks it is a loose gas cap. I have a new Lincoln gas cap hanging in my garage for the same problem that I figured out later.

I think every one should have a reader it eliminates guessing and will save you money in the long run and if you want to get me one I'll take the top o the line snap on you can even work the top with it

70 to 100 miles to usually get a code reappear or clear if fixed unless you have a reader
sometimes shorter
code reader/clearing devices should be in every glove compartment or extra too kit
could get you home one time when not expected

Drive over to your friendly neighborhood Mob member (Chuck) and swap caps for a few minutes. When I did this for another mobster (Bert) who had the same issue and purchased a new cap from the dealer and still had the issue, we found the dealer sold him the wrong cap. The light goes out immediately if the correct cap is installed.
