Tires out of spec???
My husband went to the dealership this morning to get the SSR serviced and to have them check a little shake in the steering wheel at 60mph - we assumed the alignment was a little out. After looking at the car, they told him his tires were "out of spec", and are ordering 4 new tires (which won't be here in time for the Power Tour, but they said it's not dangerous to drive on the ones we have).
Has anyone else had this problem - I'm not sure I even know what tires being out of spec means???

THE TIRES OUT OF SPEC IN MY ASSUMPTION WOULD MEAN THEY FOUND A DEFECT IN THE TIRES. WETHER IT IS A TIRE OUT OF ROUND OR PERHAPS IT WOULD TAKE TOO MUCH WEIGHT IN ON SPOT TO CORRECT AN OUT OF BALLANCE SITUATION.

My dealer replaced 3 of mine. the problem was found before I left as I noticed it on test drive. Truck had less than 130 miles on it. It took 5 weeks to get the new tires and one of them came in out of spec. They pulled a tire off of another SSR so I could have mine back. Now thats how it ought to feel going down I10 at 75...smoooooooooooooooth.

Yes - I had the EXACT same problem - my dealer did a 'road force' balance to it and found that I had a defective set of 19s on the front. Replaced under warranty at 700 miles.

Tires are critical for a smooth ride. I'm originally from Akron, Ohio, tire capital of the World. I worked for a company that manufactured tire test equipment and know how critical the tire manufacturing process is. Can't believe the dealer is replacing all four tires? I'm sure replacing the front tires will resolve the problem, but the rims are a major factor also.

A road force balancer puts road force pressure on the face of the tire at a low speed while balancing it, opposed to a dynamic spin balance. The road force balancer somehow is able to identify many different tire irregularaties that a spin balancer misses.
It would not surprise me if my tires were out of round as my ssr sat on the dealer lot for over six months and had only been driven 200 miles in that time. It can't be good for a tire to sit in one position for an extended period of time. It will be interesting to see the difference when I get new tires for the front.

When we bought ours it had been on the lot for 222 days, and had less than 100 miles on it. I bet you have the same issue - ours had a little shake in the steering wheel at 59 mph, nothing I would have thought warranted new tires - but if they're offering...

My 05 SSR with 300 miles on it has two bad front tires. The first one was due to the fact that a nail was found in the tire before I purchased the SSR and they put a tire plug in that tire. When I found the tire plug in the tire the dealership agreed to replace the tire with a new tire.
The replaced tire was badly out of balance. After leaving the dealership, I noticed a bad shake in the steering wheel on the freeway. I went back to the dealership and they sent me to a "Les Schwab" tire store across the street. They found the newly mounted tire out of balance and fixed that. I had them check the other front tire and OMG it was GROSSLY out of round. The dealership is now ordering another new tire for the driver's side of my new 05 SSR.

There have been several people having the tire problems, maybe it is the weight of the SSR? Keep the faith shiftz33, my husband bought and 05 Vette yesterday and drove it 20 miles back to work, and the check engine light came on and it started running rough!!!
When a tire is road forced balanced up to 1400 pounds is pressed on the tire and wheel asm. It simulates the force the tire puts on the road as you are driving. In excess of 28 pounds per tire on a passenger tire is bad. The ssr use Goodyears, sorry but those are some of the worst tires to put on any vehicle for a smooth ride. There is no reason at the price of each tire, Goodyear can't make a smooth, low road force tire. The average amout of measured road force will be around 20 pounds on most Goodyears. A tire like Michelin or a Toyo average around ten or less. I have seen as with anything exceptions. But combine 4 tires at 20 pounds each, thats a lot of vibration. The best thing is to live with it until the tires wear out then spend the money and buy some good ones.
My SSR also had the shakes at 60 mph - 65 mph.
The Chevrolet dealer did a load test balance and found 3 of the 4 tires defective.
The tires finally came in and they installed the 3 new tires (2 front, driver rear) and that eliminated the shakes. Rides much better now!

the toyo tire has the rim protection also. I have 15000 mi on mine now and they still look brand new as far as tread. quiet, handle the road very well, and no vibration. a yery well built tire. I will put them on again. No one make the exact same size front tire that comes on our to start with that I know of. the 275/45/r19 do not rub at any time. That is what is on the front of mine.
