Top Problem With Frayed Wires

Well my top finally went out on me yesterday. The two rear cargo sections work fine; lift all the way up but the top itself does not disengage and retract. I decided to look into the storage compartment and see if I could find the problem. What do I find? Two frayed wires; a red one and a black one. I could see that something rubbed through the coating of electrical tape on the wires all the way thru to the copper wire itself. The wire is held by two metal clamps up against part of the top mechanisms. Part of the wire is covered by a black plastic wire loom but it must have been slipping down every time the top goes up or down.

I was able to get the top itsefl to work by kind of meshing or pushing the wires back together. I was thinking about trying to maybe solder the wires back together and taping them but guess I'll have to get it to the dealer. They will probably want to order a new harness or something.

Everyone should probably look at their wires/hoses in the top area once in a while to make sure that rubbing/cutting isn't happening.

Good suggestion WOW_FCTR that's what I had been doing; but only for the scuff marks which I had been getting on the side of the top which I solved with a soft seat belt shoulder pad protector and buffing. I never noticed any wires being frayed.

We just had the wires and resevior replaced on our 2005. The resevior was cracked and leaking, and the wires were frayed. Took about 2 weeks for the wires to come in, so you may want to stop by your service department and get them on order.

I know the picture isn't the best but I was in a hurry. The wires are on the top mechanism on the passenger side right by the top stop with the half inch rubber on top. The wires are held to the mechanism by two flat metal clips. My wires were not fully covered by the plastic wire harness like they should have been. It's the same plastic wire harness that scuffs the tops on a lot of SSR's.

Oh the position of the top is when the two flap covers are all the way up but the top has not yet detached from it's latch.

Dealer is going to look at it Saturday morning to see if it can be repaired or if they need to order two new wires.

I looked in my roof compartment and I dont see anything that even resembles what you have in the picture. Can someone post a better less cell phone looking one? What I did see however is the left hand top rear corner rubbing on another wire with a white connector on it check it out.
