Tranny speed sensor

I am in the process of purchasing a 2005 manual tranny ssr. The check engine lite is on and I'm told it's a faulty transmission speed sensor. Does this make sense? what is the function of a speed sensor in a manual transmission?
They also tell me the device is on back order.

Can anyone shed a little light on this??

The sensor is on the tail part of the transmission.

I will check on the Back order part.

Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement
Removal Procedure

Remove the harness connector.
Remove the bolt (2).
Remove the vehicle speed sensor (1).
Remove the O-ring seal (3).
Installation Procedure

Install the O-ring seal (3) on the vehicle speed sensor (1).
Coat the O-ring seal (3) with a thin film of transmission fluid.
Install the vehicle speed sensor (1) into the transmission case.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the bolt (2).
Tighten

Tighten the bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

Connect the wiring harness electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor.
Refill the fluid as required.

I'll get the vin tomorrow. I'm located in florida and the ssr is at car max in Sanford. The car has under 19K and they told me it's still under warentee. Are you a GM dealer? could you overnight the part if I get contact information? It sounds to me like I should not drive it until it's fixed.
