Need help I have 2005 ssr with auto and LS-2 with 2400 miles, all options plus Delphi Navigation with backup camera and auto dimming rear view mirror from JP customs as a package wiring and all very sanitary install. Also has aluminum high capacity deep sump transmission pan. On the last outing my engine light came on and I noticed that the truck starts out in second gear and shifts very firmly to third and never gets into overdrive, it will freewheel if I let off the gas on OD but under power it will not shift up nor will it shift down to first, I also tried manual shift but first shows on the dash but it is still in second. I hooked up to a scan tool at a local shop and He found a PO-973 code which in the library said that at some point I had a voltage drop to the second shift solenoid of 4.8 seconds or more. Any help insight of what to look for would be great. He reset the code but it never took and after the second start the engine light was back on, the check section of wires and voltages to check is beyond me so I thought if someone else had similiar problem it would be much appeciated. feel free to call 541-276-1252 or e-mail if you give me your number I will call and explain more tests I have done. Thanks Dave Banzer
Sounds like you need a new ignition switch...yes, I'm serious. Use the search function on this site and you'll find tons of info. There is a new and old part #.

Welcome from AZ
Dave,
Welcome to the forum. Sorry you had to join on a sour note....
I don't have a direct answer to offer, but am sure one of the tranny experts will be chiming in shortly on this.
Joel is quite right about the (POS) ignition switch. There is a plastic module that attaches to the bottom of the switch mechanism that has been the root cause of a LOT of strange stuff. In our trucks (and a lot of other GM vehicles), that module is part of the digital network in the computer system. Last year, GM came out with a new one, P/N 15242754.
Again, welcome to the family. Please take time to add your location to your profile, so we know where you are. This is a great bunch of big-hearted folks that you will enjoy.....
Mike

sounds like the ignition switch would be a good place to start only because they are so trouble prone and worthy of update regardless. You could find a shop in your area that has the proper diagnostic tools to plug a stand alone computer into the trans to be certain the internals are functioning as they are supposed to and allowing all 4 forward gears and converter clutch activation. If the trans has all functions with the the stand alone sytem you will have ruled out the trans and can then concentrate on control function such as computer, voltage sources and wiring.
banzer go with gregs suggestions if it works from the computer stand tools it is ok and is something else.....hey greg I got put back into our transmision shop currently rebuildling allison B400 transmissions and running dyno for them

Thanks everybody for the quick reply, I feel fairly confident the ignition is the culprit I would like more detail on how the switch gave a low voltage to the shift solenoid in the transmission with the po-973 code and also forgot to mention that my cruise quit working at the same time is this pretty common too? I suppose when the limp mode goes into effect maybe it over rides the cruise? Thanks again; Dave

Dave,
The ignition switch actually has no direct connection to the tranny. What it has, is the ability to corrupt the digital signals that run around on the bus between all the computers and "nodes" in your truck. It is like interrupting the digital signal, just enough to cause dropped bits and processor mis-information. This has historically manifested itself (at one time or another) as a symptom in one member's truck or another. The top, windows, rear deck lid, power locks, cruise control, lighting systems, radio, A/C, transmission, and a crap load of others...... the most obvious has been the instrument cluster.... You have no idea where the gremlins will attack.
Go get a can of Raid and kill the bugs that run out of your system when you replace the ignition switch.
Thanks again for the replies I am enjoying this site more and more and I do really appreciate the explanation. I, like most of you do take an interest in my rides and try to understand them.
Thanks; Dave

OK boys.... Can I have an AMEN????

AMEN
Dave,
Welcome to the group. As you find your way throught the site you will soon learn that there are some names that garner great respect and others who provide for the comedic relief. You have met two of the heavy weights in the respect category. Mike in AZ as an engineer who has provided many of us with equipment that outperforms the OEM parts, and Greg who is one of, if not the main, voices in the world of transmissions here. The rest of us will most likely agree with the comments about the ignition switch module.

Me again and I thought I would have good news this time since I replaced the switch but to no avail. The dealers around here have all changed hands several times in the last three years and all the mechanics so they are called are graduates from the wash rack with no training and no tools. The G.M. dealers last owner took all the scan rools and left town so they don't have any. I feel fairley confident with one independent but I am sure that watching him work on some other vehicles I will end up with damage on mine if it goes there. Any other items to check would be great as I will try anything at this point. Thanks; Dave
Dave, it would be worth traveling to a bigger town with a qualified and experienced staff than to take chances with the group you described. You can go online to the ATRA website and see if there is a shop in your area. Members of this organization will generally be professional and serious about transmission repair. I will be going out of town till August 10th but if you would like to call our shop and talk to a tech our number is 817-599-7680. Sorry I don't have a more specific answer for you.

I had the same problem. The ignition switch WAS the answer. It turns many things on and off and the transmission module is one.
Me again only with good news; after talking to Greg on the phone he was sure it had to do with the deep sump pan install, I again pulled the pan and pulled all the solenoids out, upon removing the 2-3 solenoid wire I noticed that the prong for current connection in the receptacle was bent off to one side. I straightened and checked the other connections installed another filter, gasket and new fluid and it performed like the truck we had bought. We went on our first drive of the year and enjoyed a liesureley 220 mile trip at a measured 21 mpg.
Thanks everyone for the help and support; Dave
