UPDATE on Ash Tray Door Latch

I have been looking and my servicing dealer has been looking for part number 89045011. It is the very small claw like latch that hold the heavy ash tray door on the '05. It is most likely ton all years.

I tried your suggestions and even the industrial velcro will not hold the door in place when my "R" goes over bunps.

Soooooooooooooooooooo after trying to be patient, especially with a factory warranty in place, I called and filed and issue with Chevrolet Customer Service. I spoke with a few very nice people. They promised to check into it and after a week they called me back today. The three that were in the country, were ordered for other customers and found in "old" inventory. They have absolutely no idea if GM "ever" plans on having some OEM fabricate any further ash tray parts since the ash tray was only made for the SSR and no other Cheverolet. They were ready to close out the file because they could take no further action. My response was that's unacceptable. Bottom line they will pass this "problem" up the chain and see where it goes. They further let me know as time goes by this issue of attempting to find "obscure" parts may get worse.

I responded that if it does, they had better buckle up because there are 24,000 folks out here who have 50K vehicles and most would not be willing to roll over.

I love to think positively, they unfortunately do not sound reassuring.

Besides super glue does anyone have a REAL fix for this ash tray nonsense?

Philip

ash tray door

Mine keeps dropping down and the little tab was fatigued from trying to shut it. Well I hate to tell ya what I did. Since I don't smoke I put a dab of superglue on the 'tab and closed it. Haven't had a problem since!

I would consider removing the whole door and mounting something in it's place. (like a GPS or backup camera monitor). I looked at a 2004 on a used car lot and it has the same problem. I suggested they might want to fix that and the response was deafening silence.

ashtray latch

While it may be a fairly rare problem, there are always alternatives. ATTRITION, that unlucky thing that makes the remaining SSRs more valuable as time goes by, means that there are wrecked SSRs available to get parts from. Don't wait on GM. Tell your dealer to find one!!!

Me too ! My 2003 ash tray failed the first time I pulled down. Need to use the auxilery port for GPS navagation so it needs to be functional. Since Velcro did not work I assume magnets won't either. Hmmmmm, there must be a solution.

There's 2 more, 1 on either side of the ashtray, under the black flip up caps.

Philip, Try Schrams Auto and Pick_a_Part, on ebay, both are parting out SSR's right now. Use the "Ask seller a question" link.

I went looked up the ashtray area. The latch is part of the door plastic and the catch is part of the lower dash assembly. Maybe the 2 pieces of foam rubber on either side of the catch is in the way of the latch on yours?

I do know that if you need an entire lower dash assembly, SSR6SPD has one for sale.

When I lived in Texas, we fixed everything with bailing wire - since you don't smoke, just tie it up.

Thumbs up ashtray

a 6" strip of Duct tape sprayed black works wonders on holding it up!

Seriously I have to believe that of the numerous magnetic door catches that
are to be found at your local home center one can be found and modified to
hold the tray in the upright position.

Hey MauiMike
Great! Have to say I never saw those little suckers before. Since I don't smoke, that takes care of that problem.
Many thanks....I need to sit down and read the manual on this truck.

Velcro

There are all different types of velcro. Look for something more industrial in nature if that's what you want to use for now.

Ash Tray Mod.

I am at a M.H Rally in Greensboro N.C. looking a friends 06 SSR who has reworked his ash tray . He removed the complete assy. from the dash ,then used a Dremel tool to cut out the inner pcs,( ash receiver and lighter) now he has another Glove Box Compartment. I am going to do mine this weekend. Looks Sharp when opened and on the outside , when closed, you cannot tell it has been modified.

Who did you order the part from. My dealer and GM customer service say there are NONE available anywhere in their system.

If you have a supply line I would love having you share that with me.
