I had my '04 for 2 yrs with 14,000 miles. I have never had a roof problem save for the marking on the roof on rear on the passenger side. Today the weather was nice and I tried to lower the top and I got THE message. I did a search and tried all the recommended fixes and nothing, just a motor noise and a sound of something moving, the tonneau doesn't move or the top, only the windows go down.
Has anyone finally figured out what causes the timeout, are the dealers now up to date on fixes? I would hate for them to mess up everything as they often do.

If you don't want to go to the dealer...and I don't blame you, why not try something simple first. How about going thru the manual lowering and raising of the roof. Procedure is in your owners manual. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will work after that or you might see something obviously wrong such as a leaking hydraulic line or low fluid.

First have another person stand on one side of the tonneau cover and lightly lift the cover as you lower the roof. If this starts the process, then what you need are the replacement "Flipper Door (tonneau cover) Guide Bumper Replacement"
rollers. The original ones from the factory from the early models are rubber, the replacement ones are now a harden plastic. There may have been a production change in the later years. Also the instruction sheet is from ASC, so apparently they were aware of this problem.
It took me all of 60 seconds, 30 seconds each side to replace mine, and my roof works everytime, no more Roof Cycle Timeouts. I will try to locate the part # that you will need. Hope this helps............................................................Tom
Found part # 15775860 also sent you a PM with my post from last year on the fix for the top with these parts.........................let me know what happens......

Two more possiblities
The seals may be sticking to the moving parts if the roof hasn't been used for a while, causing an over pressure to trigger and stop the roof form going anywhere.
Secondly, if it has sat for a while and the seals are not sticking then there's a possiblilty that that fluid has merely drained back out of the lines and will take a few cycles to get it back in place with out the air. This happened to mine last year after it sat for a few months without the roof being cycled. I believe I cycled it down and up approx. Ten times before it worked without a hitch.
Make sure the truck is running when you attempt this. Low battery will also cause the pump not to function properly.

I had problems with the tonneau on mine not too long ago. Mine was due to a wire that had been cut by the tonneau cover hinge. Dealer got the problem fixed quickly.

Today the truck sat in the sun all day and after 7 tries, it went down, so Fuzzy's idea of fluid being out of the lines may have been the culprit. I will check fluid level and the bushings when the weather gets warmer. Thanks for all of the replies.
Yesterday I put top down to go to echocardiograph, put up when arrived, put down when leaving, put up when home in garage, nice HUH! But 'NOT' today!!!! Won't go down fur nuttin'. Tonneau goes up, 2nd part flips down, some motor makes a sound like it wants everything to start moving, but all of a sudden I hear a loud click from right rear corner of top well and tonneau jumps like sumebody goosed it and "ROOF CYCLE TIMEOUT" comes on. I searched the forum and read the past solutions, tried some, but it still won't go down.
Now how do you get to check the fluid level. I can see the resvoir but no way can I get to it let alone see if it's full or low. Not a very clear plastic and the fluid is so I light I can't see any level with my big George Torch!!!
Why would it work yesterday and now quit? OK Dumb ? by me sorry. Straw that broke the Camels back! Guess I just take to dealer and pray.

Reason: spelling idiot
check the wires on the passenger side next to the hinge. That is where the wire was cut on mine and caused the problem. I think this is also where someone elses was frayed. It wasn't real obvious until you kindof pulled the wires apart from the bundle
OK gang, here's some pics of my top compartment. Looks to me as tho I'm low on fluid. Also, what is that big black box attached to the rear panel above the reservoir?

Yes, you are low on fluid. Bring it half way between the green dot and where it presently is..........then see if the roof will go down. Once the roof is down bring the fluid level to the green dot.

The black box contains a computer module (or stereo amp...dang can't remember now...it's been 3 years) and the 2 rear speakers......I removed my box and stuck the computer module under the waterfall....

What are the DOT specks on the fluid used. An equivalent should be available at NAPA. Now I used to be 5'10" but now I'm only 5'9", and even with my oxy tank shifted round to my back side and standing on a stool I can't reach the little brass plug on the reservoir. Is there a better way to get to it? grimmye

By the way, I would like to know "HOW IN THE F#@$#%&*(*&%@!#$%^&*(*K" does one get the Top Release Tool to engage. My oxygen went from 96 to 63 just trying to get the tool to engage and I never did succed. I even used a penlite and could not get IT to grab anything. To my old eyes it looks like the plate that has the pattern for the tool is flush with the area where the 'point' is supposed to index, meaning IT will never catch on any thing! grimmy

I don't think that you're going to find the correct fluid anywhere else. I bought mine from GM Parts Direct: http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ for much less than the local dealer wanted but it took a couple of weeks to get it.

I’m not an engineer so I don’t know if this is do-able. Can a small hole be drill though that brass plug, attach a small flexible tube that comes up higher with a another opening valve attach in which you can just add the oil at that level without going though the pain of reaching way down there.
Hopefully that would be easier and even the ladies could do it without any problems.
Anybody know what size the brass plug is??? I'm sure it's probably metric.
