Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Loose Bolts

My wife has been driving Blue 06 on and off the last week and told me she heard a "flutter" from time to time sort of like when we were kids we would attach a playing card to a bike fender brace and let the spokes hit it when you were riding the bike ( I am really old).

I looked under the hood and began poking around and realized the curved shield over the intake manifold was loose. I popped my silver SSR cover off and tried to tighten the bolts but they just spun with no evidence of tightening. They would not back out either. I took a wide blade screwdriver and put it under the lip of the head of the bolt and then tried to back it out and one by one all four bolts popped up. When they came out they had a brass collar on them.

When I removed the intake shield I realized the brass collars were supposed to be imbedded in the sight shield bracket and the bolts screwed into them. It seems someone overtorqued the bolts and spun the collars out of the bracket.
I have had the truck at the dealers a couple of times for problems including a new fuse box under the hood and I am guessing the service rep spun the bolts with a pneumatic wrench and over torqued them.

I am taking the parts to the dealer and demanding a new sight shield bracket. I will put it back together to be sure it is done right. See photos below.

Lesson learned: be careful and don't over tighten these bolts.

Chuck

I like your engine cover. I did exactly the same with mine, including the silver insert.

Update: I went to the dealer and showed the service rep the parts and explained what I think happened. He was very cooperative and will order the Sight Shield Bracket and I told him I would put it on.

The service manual says use 5 N-m (44 lb in ) on the bracket bolts then 10 N-m (89 lb in ) on the sight shield itself. I would be willing to bet the service tech just spun the sight shield bolts with a power wrench and never gave it a thought.

The sight shield has only been off once or twice to my knowledge. I installed it originally when it arrived. I bought the blue sight shield from a Fanatic member who advertised them on the site here.

Have a great weekend
