Watch those header clearances!

As i mentioned in a couple of otehr posts recently, my professional emchanic friend and car restorer / hotrodder, Randy Peurifoy, just recently completed a hop-up project for one of our Fanatics.

One of the mods included was the installation of Kooks headers (without the cats in this case, in spite of my advice to the owner ).

Randy pointed out to me after the install how close the header piping came, on the driver side, to vehicle components that should NOT be subjected to heat. Last I saw, Randy was going to try to convince the owner to let him take some heat insulating measures there.

I mention it here because this is not the first time this has popped up on SSR installs. A number of other Fanatics have alerted me to this, with more than one brand of headers.

In the case of the one Randy was working on, I think it power steering component proximity, and in some other cases, I have heard it was brake system.

On my own 04 SSR with Dynatech Supermaxx headers, Randy noted that the AC system was dripping condensate onto the headers. This is of course bad for the headers. He remedied that forthwith by routing a drain line backward through the chassis, away from the headers.

Just something to look out for, and to take remedial measures on; It's part of a sanitary and safe installation.

Kooks Header Clearance

Jim

Dennis Reinhart just completed the installation of Kooks headers on my '05 six speed. As usual, he did a fantastic job. Key takeaways were they were very difficult / labor intensive to install. In the end they do fit OK. As mentioned in previous posts, you do need to secure the power steering hoses and add heat shield there as well as around the fuel lines and ABS. Also the tip regarding fitting the Taylor wires with 45 degree ends was very helpful as these wires fitted without touching the 17/8" primaries.

I have to say, I love the final effect. I have the Magnaflow cat back and the combination makes a great sound, purposeful but easy to live with. Next stop the dyno!

Here are some pictures Dennis took that show how tight the clearances are:
