Wheel Problem Solved!!

Long story short...The left front wheel that I have been waiting for several months for has been replaced and no more shimmy!!

I watched the wheel on the balancing machine and knew immediately that it would be better. The original wheel had a excess runout that was visible just by watching it on the balancer.

No offense, but why did it take months? Sorry that it took so long! I got one LF chrome wheel in less than a week. The tech bashed a lift post arm.

I contacted Goodyear, Ohio, they directed me to Oahu and I purchased the last 2 19's from Oahu and had them shipped over. The computer said they had 5, but when they put their hands on them @ my request, they only had 2, so I took them.

I've had two OEM wheels replaced (under warranty) and they both were installed on the car in about a week.

Sorry you had to wait that long.

No offense taken What happened is the dealer (not selling dealer) ordered a wheel on 5/30/06 and it was backordered. They were told there were problems with wheels and a new part number was coming out. New number never materialized and finally the dealer got 2 wheels in. They said they were still trying to find out if a superceded part number wheel was going to become available because they were told there was a 50-50 chance of any given wheel of the old number being bad. I finally got tired of waiting and suggested they mount the wheels they got in and see if at least one of them met runout specs. They finally did this and I went to get the wheel swapped. Now the fun begins!! They order parts based entirely on VIN numbers. When I bought my SSR from the selling dealer it had satin wheels...with a factory chrome package. Looked ridiculous. The dealer agreed to swap wheels and tires from another SSR he had in stock to seal the deal. There is a form that dealers are supposed to fill out when they do this kind of thing so the VIN and parts match. They didn't so the wheels that came in were...you guessed it...satin!! After this screwup it only took about 5 days for them to get a chrome wheel and that is pretty much the end of story. No more shimmy shake shake and I'm happy

Oh...BTW...I took a peek at the shipping tag on the box the wheel came in. It came from ASC in Lansing, MI.

Wow, sounds like the silly things that happen here. I asked my 1 & only dealership, what did you do with the damaged wheel you took off my truck? We threw it out! Idiots. Only the chrome was scratched & gouged. Would have made a nice spare. Dealer price about $575, Retail $800+

Happy that you are happy with it and that you are on the road again.

Interesting, do you think some of the shimmy problems owners have been having are the wheels and not the tires? It just may be.

There are lots of pages in the shop manual dedicated to finding the cause of shimmy problems. Checking wheel runout is in those pages. Tire should be removed from wheel and wheel runout checked per shop manual. (Along with all the other steps in there) Unfortunately trying to get a tech to actually follow the steps in the shop manual may not be easy. It seems they all have their own methodology in finding the cause. Yes...I do think there are a lot of shimmy problems caused by bad wheels on our SSR's. The bigger the wheel the more the problem is accentuated.

chief1,

You can purchase the standard set of SSR Service Manuals from Helm at www.helminc.com

They are the official GM printer of all Service Manuals. I believe they are about $130 plus shipping. They are the thickness of two phone books and worth every penny.

Mike

I think there are several threads about the out of round tires and wheels. Seems to be an issue one or the other but a lot to find it!
