Wheel and tire fitting

Will a 20 x 8.5 rim fit on the stock back tires or will I need new ones if I purchase this size? Also what will be the changes if it does fit?

Thanks

Since 8.5" is significantly narrower than the factory wheel, it will likely affect tire wear. Also, be sure to check the offset so you know how far into the wheelwell the tire will sit. If the outer edge of the tire is too far inside the fender, it might look a little strange.

Wheel Size

Goodyear lists the recommended wheel sizes for the rear 20" RSA tire from 10" to 12" wide.

Do you think 20x 9.5 would be obtainable to keep the stock rear tires since it is only off half of an inch from stock?

Check with the tire manufacture

An 8.5" rim will NOT mount the stock rear tire safely. Too much difference.

A 9.5" is probably OK. It is always a "probably" when you choose to go beyond the manufacture's specs, which do tend to error on the safe side.

A .5" difference has been officially approved by tire and vehicle manufactures before. BMW M3 has used a .5" narrower rim than tire recommended, and the Corvette has used a .5" wider rim than tire recommended. Both had to received everyones' approval to be legal.

The hard part is to be able to find someone who is has the knowledge and be willing to give you honest information. Even tire reps refer to use manufactue's specs as strict guidelines, due to liability issues.

Jim G. is right when he says your tires carry your life.
