Brookings Oregon Retirement Recon Visit
Just a heads up - looks like I'll be making a journey out of California on Sept 22nd - 25th.
The plan is to head north up the valley (Hwy99/I-5) as far as Weed Ca, then take Hwy 97 to Klamath Falls and on up to Crater Lake - I'll be spending the night somewhere near Crater Lake area - depending how far I get the 1st day.
Day 2 (Thurs) - Crater Lake to the Oregon coast - via Cottage Grove (maybe?). I'd like to see Cottage Groves' Main Street - as that is where the parade scene from Animal House was filmed. Then start south and stay overnight in Brookings..
Day 3 (Fri) Explore the Brookings area - then start south on Hwy 101. (or poss stay a second night???)
Day 4 or 5 - Hwy 1 - Hwy 1 - Hwy 1 Pacific Coast Highway....

Brookings to Gold Beach on 101
Hi Keith!
I might suggest a truly wonderful adventure 30 miles north of Brookings at Gold Beach, where you can reserve a spot on the Mail Boat for an exceptional ride up and back on the fabulous Rogue River ! The scenery is breathtaking, the experience a real thrill, the memory PRICELESS !!!

Enjoy,

Just checked out the Mail Boat website - might have to tack on an extra day to take a ride in!

Keep an eye out for me!!!
Well,
Seeing as you're going to be really close by if you get to Cottage Grove, 38 to the coast is a great twisting drive.
If you were willling to drive a few miles north to Dunes City, these nice people would be perfectly happy to scare the living bejeeees out of you.
You have to take their sandrail ride with their pro driver - not the little buggies you get to drive, or Big Blue, the giant bus that carries 25 people.
Ask Sue about our sandrail ride last September. Iris says it's the stupidest thing she's ever done, but she also says she's glad she did it. Definitely way up there for thrills and incredible views. One dune rises to 400 ft.. Iris said - Oh my God - he's not going up there, is he? Yup - right to the top and over the other side.
If you do decide to stay overnight in the Florence area, the Driftwood Shores on the ocean can't be beat for the sound of pounding surf all night.

Add a few more weeks onto your trip and SEE IT ALL !!
Keith, you are sooooooo close to some of the greatest recreational areas around...... from Gold Beach a WEE bit of a drive to Florence with its incredible sand dunes !!
In Florence, Ray is correct, the best place to stay is Driftwood Shores on the ocean, but the greatest affirmation of a ride of your lifetime is on thread: Save for PHOTOs: Oregon Coast SSR TREK, post number 72 on
I didn't really want to ride the Pro SandRails, but chose NOT to chicken out - lots of sand in the mouth, white knuckles and a GREAT BIG SANDY SMILE !!!!
DO NOT WEAR CHAPSTICK or any other sticky sun screen

Retiring in Oregon
Moving to Oregon to retire is a wise move to concider, I lived my whole life in California from Orange County to Riverside County to San Joaquin Valley, then moved to Oregon in 2006 when I retired, never been so happy, Calif is fine to visit now but Oregon is great place to live.

Shooting to get to Oakridge via Crater Lake the 1st day.
Day 2 will start out with a "Covered Bridges" route - there seems to be a BUNCH in the Cottage Grove area.. One Right on Main Street... Then out 38 to the Pacific...

In less than 24 hours I'll be on the road! The final roadtrip of the Summer and 1st roadtrip of the Fall...
I'll try to post some photos along the way.
There should be a FANTASTIC photo op tomorrow evening at Crater Lake - a nearly Full Moon Rising just before sunset!
Oakridge OR tomorrow night - Brookings the next - Then southbound thru Del Norte/Humboldt Counties and the Redwoods on Friday and another overnight in Fort Bragg.
