My SSR: Silver with Pink Ghost Flames, Pink Lettering & Flares with PINK Bow Ties on Rims!
Northwest SSR's Invite you to join our Oregon Coast Tour, Sept. 12 - Sept. 20th
This SSR Adventure is planned so you can join us for a few days or the entire time. I-5 is roughly 1 1/2 hours from the Ocean beaches, wherever you are.
September 12th to September 20th
The group will basically gather Saturday in Longview, WA, traveling Hiway 4, a very curvy road along the Columbia on the Washington side, to Long Beach/Ilwaco area (home to a NEW Northwest SSR fan, Timothy) and cross the Astoria Bridge - quite a thrill in a wind storm - heading south to Seaside with a quick stop at Warrenton to gas-up at Costco before heading to Seaside and our first night on the road.
This plan includes the opportunity to do what we all like best - be together with our SSR FANTASTIC Family, go on great drives, travel scenic routes, and includes suggestions for places to stay along the way......... thinking of two (2) nights in each of Three (3) places: Seaside, (several choices for rooms) where we could drive to the Columbia River, view the Peter Iredale, Battery Russell, Ft. Clatsop etc., and/or cover Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock at Tolovana (Mo's has great chowder). Leave for Lincoln City by way of the Oregon Coast Hiway 101 to Tillamook (Scenic drive - 3 capes, Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, to Sand Lakes Park to Pacific City for lunch at the Pelican Brewery at Cape Kiwanda (the other Haystack Rock) where dory fisherman launch their boats from the beach into ocean surf). On to Lincoln City (choice of places to stay). Scenic Drive to the Beach, Casino, Outlet Mall for Doug & Joanne Young, beach combing and maybe a drive to some of the interesting places such as the Museum of Flight to visit the Spruce Goose. Then to Depot Bay, Salishan, and to Newport. Newport is quite an Art & Fishing community. There are fabulous places to visit including the Yacquina Head Lighthouse and Aquarium ! Some may wish to visit the Sea Lion Caves - which we pass as we near Florence. And finally, Florence Oregon - dune buggy rides, good prices on fresh crab from the fishing boats - shopping - wonderful town !! Lot of choices for Motels in Florence as well.
2 nights at each of 3 places:
Seaside, Newport, Florence - leaving for home on Saturday, Sept. 19th 1 night at Lincoln City
Places of interest along the way -
Ecola State Park, Haystack Rock - Cannon Beach
Newhalem - great little shops - Ice Cream - winery tour
Manzanita - wonderful wee town, fabulous drive to the cove
Tillamook - Cheese Factory, Flight Museum, great drive to the Ocean
**McMinnville - Museum of Flight, Spruce Goose - about 45 min from Lincoln City
Yacquina Lighthouse & Aquarium, Newport
Devil's Punchbowl - Incredible sight, great $$ restaurant
Florence - Oregon Dunes Recreational Area - Dune Buggy rental & tours, kite flying, water boats
Frankly, the Oregon Coast has so much beauty - I do plan to stop everyone at the scenic lookouts, so a Camera is NECESSARY !!!

I'm organizing a cruise-in again this year at the Dallas MotorVu Drive-in ( a few miles West of Salem,OR on Hwy. 22 toward Lincoln City and the Oregon Coast). It will be Sept. 19. Gates open at 4PM with the cruise-in, great music, raffle prizes, food and more. It is a double feature with American Graffitti and Grease starting at dusk. This is an open event to all special interest and classic cars and trucks of all years. Being a drive-in movie, this is weather pemitting of course. I would like to invite all of you that might be on your way home from the Coast Run to stop by and have a great time. There's lots of lodging options in Dallas and Salem. I hope to participate in part of the coast run and meet all of you. Check out my web site for my other car events Stayton Oregon Stro's Car Shows | Stro's Photography Inc. . Email or call me if you need more info.
Thanks,

Really want to do the Oregon Coast again, but still not sure yet about our scheduling for this fall. This drive-in/car show event makes it very tempting. It looks like Sue's tentative schedule will have us in that area at that time. If we're in Florence on the 18th, and headed for Lincoln City the 19th, the timing could be really good to make this happen. Looks like about 50 miles inland from Lincoln City. Stay in Dallas on the 19th, McMinnville on the 20th then back to the coast highway. This is starting to look good.
I'm going to check my old records for the motel we stayed at in Florence in 04. Right on the ocean, pounding surf, awesome. Left the patio doors open all night in November so we could hear the surf. Sure was damp in that room in the morning.
I've been thinking about renting Amercan Gaffitti the last few days - I could save the rental cost.
We had a Drive-in Movie night in Langley last September. Great event, lots of fun - except for the movie. It was Burn after Reading. Should have been called Burn Before Watching.
Besides - I want a look at your silver and orange SSR. Sounds like a great color combination.

I've wanted that truck since 03 - just wasn't in the market financially when it was auctioned that fall. Found it again in August in Chicago, bought it, and was able to purchase the guitar back from the previous owner of Sig 12.
Gibson built this one-off guitar for GM. The truck and guitar followed the Rock and Roll Power Tour in 03. No idea what the guitar is really worth. I've had some pretty crazy numbers tossed out by guitar collectors, but at this stage, it needs to stay with the truck.
I need to get a bit better with computers. I have a VCR tape, and made a DVD of Sig 12 on the Trucks show on Speed. Stacey David played the guitar on that 4 minute feature. I'd like to get it on YouTube so other Fanatics could see it.
I'll have the truck in Penticton for the Beach Cruise in June. Great opportunity to join some of the Northwest Fanatics for a fun weekend and a great car show.

I could think of a few other things to do with the movie. You are right though the gathering was fun. Hope we can do it again this summer. Will have to get Sue working on it. Carol and I want to go back to Ft. Langley as (She) didn't get to do any serious shopping.
See you soon.

Update (5/2/09) for the Oregon Coast run, Sept. 12-20th
We're working on recommendations for hotels & motels along the Oregon coast . As most prices will drastically change after Labor Day, if anyone knows how one makes reservations (Internet) which will notify back if the price changes, I'd appreciate your help. I plan to map out general places to gather during each day, places of interest, and times our group will gather to caravan. Each person will be on their own to obtain hotel reservations.
As a list of fun places to visit is posted, your additions & thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Ii is a good idea to bring a radio with you so we can keep in touch along the drive. Our northern group will meet in Longview, WA for a windy road drive to the Astoria bridge and on to Seaside for Saturday night. Anyone from Oregon is welcome to meet us there as well to begin the adventure !!

Two hotels we stayed at and recommend:
Ebbtide Motel
300 N. Promenade
Seaside Oregon 97138
503-738-8371
Nice motel on the beach walkway. Rooms have a small kitchenette, free wi-fi and good parking. Right downtown so close to everything. I think we paid about $70/night.
Manzanita Beach Fireside Inn
114 Lameda Ave
Manzanita, Oregon 97130
503-368-1001
Very nice quiet waterfront hotel on a rock beach with crashing waves. Rooms have fireplaces. I think we paid $90/night but a very nice spot to kick up your heels. A few miles from town, but we found a nice pub to have dinner.

TugBoat.....
If I remember correctly, you mentioned getting reservations through Expedia or one of those........ I pretty much know the Motels I will recommend (especially for SSR security), but only travel via my RV or friend's Guest rooms ! Will you please think about a way to explain how to use these Internet travel sites opting for the best deals, and I will call you next week at your convenience.... !!!

Hi Sue,
I'll try to join ya'll for your return up the coast on Sunday, the 20th, when I'm back in the area. I'm leaving between June 14th and 16th, depending on when I get everything in storage , and returning between September 13th and 15th, but then I work the 16th through the 19th. I'm attending the Texas and Colorado rallies and whatever else I can figure out . Please just keep the posts up to date, and I'll show for whatever I can work out.
Thanks, Dave

Sue, we just drove, stopped somewhere and looked for a place to stay. Had a travel book and a GPS. Never used the on-line hotel booking.

Seaside Motels
Last time Mary and I stayed at Seaside we stayed at the Comfort Inn, many of the rooms have decks that overlook the canal that runs thru town and they had free breakfast in the morning, we were really impressed with how nice everything was there.

Activities on the Oregon Coast
On your list of things to do on the Oregon Coast, definitely concider taking a Whale Watching boat out of Newport, they are not very expensive and almost garanteed to see whales, there is a large group of grey whales that live near Newport for 10 months each year.

Thanks Tim -
The Comfort Inn is one of the ones on my list as it has pretty secure parking... the other one is brand new - right off Broadway - so I guess I will go there to see what arrangements I can make............ it is also on the canal.......
Now to find a week when I can hook up my Hi-Lo and trek south !!!!
