Oregon Coast - Hiway 101 - Sept 12th - 20th

New information on thread 52 as of August 30

Today we have a total of 15 FANTASTICS:
Nevada - 2 !!!
BC - 4
OR - 3
WA - 6

The Oregon Coast in September has better hotel/motel deals after kids go back to school. Better prices, more availability and less crowds when the kids are gone............. Labor Day is late - Sept. 7th, so we are leaving the north on Saturday, Sept 12th and returning back to Washington and beyond on Sunday, Sept.20 - if that is not too late for crossing the mountains for Ray, Tom and others.

With your input and suggestions, I think we can plan something that brings us close to the southern part of Oregon so we can meet up with Tim n' Mary who are coming to the coast Friday afternoon and be with us for at least a few days...........

My thoughts are for the northern SSR group to meet in Longview, WA (Exit 39 off I-5)- 2 1/2 hours from Bellevue drive to Seaside on the curvy, scenic Washington side, cross the Astoria bridge into Oregon and stay in Seaside (See Post 36). We have been invited to join the (famous) Seaside Car Show & Cruise, and will ask if the group wants to drive north from Seaside along the dunes, to the south Jetty of the Columbia River, view the shipwreck Peter Iredale at fort Steven's and Battery Russell and then time to explore Cannon Beach, before packing our PJ's for the next adventure. (We have dinner reservations in Seaside at the fabulous BIG FOOT restaurant !)

From Seaside, we will travel Hwy 101 south to Tillamook, 3 capes scenic drive - Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and lunch at the great Pelican Brewery at Cape Kiwanda, Pacific City (Home of "Little Haystack Rock"- fish fresh from the dories that launch into the sea every morning. We will arrive in Lincoln City early afternoon in time to explore and check into our motel.

Our next stop will be 2 days in the great town of Newport with stops along to way to enjoy the ocean views. At Newport, we will visit the Lighthouse and tidal pools, the Aquarium and explore the grand beaches. Along the gorgeous bay there are lots of galleries, fund shops and restaurants. Lots of options !

Then, on to Florence, with its Great Sand Dunes, Dune Buggies, quaint Beach town along the river, fresh crab, and lots of great places to explore.

Departing on Sept 19th (Saturday) for home or on to Dallas, Oregon, we say our goodbyes ! Some will join the Strohmeyer's (chevycars69) at a Cruise-In and a Movie before returning home !!

We have some interest from the northern California SSR group as well - and our Canadian friends............... Maybe even two secret guests !!!

So far, these are the ones who have emailed to me personally and they are all THUMBS UP !!!!
Booked as of August 8th:

Glenn & Carol - Redracr - booked the entire trip
Tim & Mary - TMZSSR - booked Best Western Seaside
Roy & Sandy - Edmonds - booked entire trip

Jack & Sandi - GO N BYBY - booked the entire trip
Meliinda & Bob - havingaBlast - Henderson, NV
Sandy & Wayne - turnheads - Langley, BC

/black Ray & Iris - flassh - booked Florence, Dallas

/silver Tim - sonofhndr - Seaside

Sue & Lyn - tickledpink - booked entire trip
Peter & Cindy - DRAGN !!!!! - booked entire trip

Ken & Merry - 0stee874 - Portland, OR
Tony & Cindy - tnmieng - Portland, OR
Bert & Sherry - Bert Schneider - Henderson, NV

Terry & Jeri - seattleterry - Booked entire trip
Mark - jester - Seaside, Dallas/Drive In

John & Dianne - Abbotsford, BC

This looks like some thing my wife and I would enjoy. I am retired, she is retiring at the end of May (soon to be retired school teacher). We are going to the Texas Rally in June and plan to see the country by going to various SSR get togeth ers. We went to Maggie Valley last May and to Springfield in June of 2006.

Mary and I live 30 miles straight east of Lincoln City off of Hwy 18, sounds like you are talking about stretching this trip thru 2 weekends, maybe we could join you in Seaside the 1st weekend then if you could do Lincoln City the next weekend on your way back north we could join you again.

Personal shopper for the Outlet Mall in Lincoln City !!

Dear Douggie,

So good to hear from you after our crazy NW winter !! I bet you hauled in a lot of wood to heat your home, but at least the coldness outside was a good place to store your beer !!

I will include a trip to the Outlet Mall in Lincoln City on our Oregon Coast Tour - just for you........... I plan to post some thoughts on our ideas for lots of great Scenic drives, places of interest, car washes (I know them all), places to stay and side trips. My thought is to stay in one place for two nights, giving everyone time to see what they wish, do a tour of the area, etc. Opinions are happily accepted !

Circle the dates - Sept. 12 to Sept 20th !!

New thread started for Oregon trip in Sept.

Please read the plans for our Northwest SSR Event on the Oregon Coast and add your comments. We are more than happy to change time spent in each area so everyone can enjoy what they wish to see or do. Lots of time to iron out details, and I am sure the Motel Rates will be lower than they are posted now. I have all that information to share at a later date.

Hope you can join us !!

Send me your thoughts !!

Oregon coast cruise

Not sure if you knew that the annual Seaside Wheel & Waves car show was going on Sept 11th thru 13th - nice custom car/hot rod show.

Keep this in mind because motel reservations may become hard to find in and around Seaside.

Definitely planning on being with you on that weekend.

I just officially retired this Monday 6/1 and would definitely be interested in joining on this cruise especially since it is in my back yard as we live in Tigard Or. I would love details on this as they develope so we can make appropriate reservations. I always go to Lincoln City in late August for a softball tourney every year anyway.

Thumbs up SEASIDE OREGON - NEWS FLASH - RE: Sept 12 - 14

Reporting from Seaside, OR, June 19, 2009
Posted as suggestions with the primary intention of having those of us who will be arriving in Seaside on Sat, Sept 12th, an attempt to keep our motels within close proximity to the activity in town, but also with great attention to the security & parking of our trucks.

Our September Oregon Coast stop in Seaside (Sept. 12-14) coincides with the great Seaside Car & Hot Rod Show - Saturday & Sunday - which makes getting reservations NOW very important. Included in this thread will be several suggestions (rooms available now) from each of three Motels:

Most of us are booked here: Best Western Ocean View Resort: May have only a few rooms left, but does have a AAA, Senior Discounts. Big parking lot, 4 short blocks from Broadway:Western Ocean View Resort Seaside Hotel
Seaside Oregon Hotel - Hotel on Oregon Coast
414 North Prom
Seaside, OR 97138
(800) 234-8439

Shilo Oceanside (right in the midst of the excitement, on the Promenade, Beach & Turnaround), has some rooms available. AAA, Senior, Military 10% discount. Rooms range from partial view to NO view - $199.00 - $159. Sat. night will be more expensive....... phone 1-800-222-2244

Next door (on the Promenade & Beach) Older motel, the Seashore Inn. Manager Ron Blum says he will discount rooms to our SSRs, plus AAA, Seniors. He will also block an area for our SSR parking only. No view - $109 Sat, $99 Sun. 2 Queens $179 Sat. $155 Sun. Call Ron Blum - mention Northwest SSRs, 1-888-738-6368 (Remember, these rooms put you in the middle of the activity with access to an easy exit from town as well !)

3 blocks North - on the Promenade - the Hi Tide Resort - contact name is Melodie as she is offering a nice "Car Show' Discount to our SSR group.
2 Queens (tower, so maybe a view) normally $200 - $160
2 Queens,, $150 Sat, $130 Sun
Call 1-800-621-9876

Most of us are booked here: [COLOR="Red"][B][SIZE="4"]Best Western Ocean View Resort: May have only a few rooms left, but does have a AAA, Senior Discounts. Big parking lot, 4 short blocks from Broadway:Western Ocean View Resort Seaside Hotel
Seaside Oregon Hotel - Hotel on Oregon Coast
414 North Prom
Seaside, OR 97138
(800) 234-8439

There are others of course, Seaside will be the most expensive due to their downtown event......
Others of note on the east side of town (opposite of the beach, but within walking distance): Please check with one of the Internet Reservation methods:
Inn at Seaside
Holiday Inn Express

FINALLY, I am pleased to offer to each of you, a personal invitation from the Director of the Great Seaside Car Show, Mr. Gary Dibolt. Not only will Gary make room for those of you who would like to participate in the car show, he has invited our Northwest SSR Group to join in their Cruise and Parade, Saturday night beginning at 5:00 pm !!! Should be a hoot !!

Suggestions are being noted for good food, and places NOT TO MISS !!!

Later,
Sue

Looking forward to this event. It's been a looooooong time with no cruising.

have two prior commitments the weekend of the 12th, but we'll probably leave here on Wednesday the 16th and take a leisurely cruise along the coastline so we can get to Florence on Thursday late afternoon.

If you have a list for the Saturday night drive-in, please include Ray and Iris.

We definitely are planning on being there for at least part of this event on parts of both week ends. Is there an itinery for this yet? I plan on being there on Sat 9/12 and bringing the wife back on Sun 9/13. Then hooking back up with everyone on the following week end. Will that be at Florence? I need to know so we can make reservations for that week end of 9/19. Looking forward to this!

Which nights??

We're planning on getting to Florence on the 17th to meet up with the SSR Power Tour.

I did some digging into old files. We stayed at the Driftwood Shores in Florence about 4 years ago.

Florence Oregon Motel Resort and Conference Center Driftwood Shores

About 3 miles out of Florence, on the ocean, sleeping to the sound of pounding surf. Price was reasonable. Parking was good. Not the latest or greatest and the walls were a little thin.

I'd stay there again, but I'd recommend trying to get a room on the top floor.

Sue was out exploring the area this weekend - she may have some better alternatives for us in Florence?

We'd like to stay wherever the rest of the group will be - hopefully with safe parking.

We've also got to find accomodations for Saturday the 19th in or near Dallas so we can take in the Drive-In. Any recommendations there?

looks good Ray. You, us, and DRAGN could share the 3 bdrm. It would more than likely be on the top floor. Can you say ?

Here's a website for more Motels in Seaside:

Hotels & Motels

I met with the Seaside Car Show Director, Gary Dibolt, again on Saturday during the Seaside Muscle Car Show & Cruise !!! Gorgeous Muscle Cars as far as you could see up and down Broadway !! It is a very popular place for car shows, and the one in Sept. 12th & 13 is one of the most popular !!!

Because of our Seaside dates, I decided to check a few things out....... and yes, the Best Western is very nice - big parking lot, but no parking spaces guaranteed. It also has an italian Restaurant and Pub of some sort. I booked through EXPEDIA.com: http://www.expedia.com/default.asp

Wherever you choose to stay, you will have a packet of information for the day's events, places, times and cell phone contacts with those attending. Hopefully no one gets left out, left behind, or is forced to do/see/or eat something they don't want to participate in.

We have Sunday evening dinner reservations at the BIG FOOT restaurant, which in the older days was more of a biker bar, but now the most highly recommended (by the locals) place for prime rib........ We have their banquet room (Happy Hour in the Bar is from 3-6 - dinner at 7:00pm !!! The food is sooooooo good, I had to go back a second time for lunch.......

Getting reservations in Seaside is the key right now. I have other suggestions I will post for Lincoln City, Newport and Florence.

Please join us for a night or two, several days, a week, or the entire adventure as we culminate with a great group for a Cruise and Drive In Movie on Saturday! (Peter & Cindy won't be driving the DRAGN, so we will all be safe at the Drive-In !!)

Sue
