Iris and I cruised our Winding Road Tour last night to make sure all was good.
Should be a great run - lots of twists and turns, great scenery, and an ice cream stop thrown in.
Saw several deer last night wandering around.
Going back out in the next few days to scout out a Summerland run for Sunday afternoon.
Saturday Night Winding Road Cruise
Itinerary:
Dinner at 4:00
Meet at the SSR tent at 5:00 PM for last minute details, awards, and the raffle prizes.
Leave at 6:30 PM. We will be gone between 2 ½ and 3 hours, with 2 bathroom stops approximately 7:45 PM and 8:30 PM
We will stop 15 minutes at the rest stop, and approximately 30 minutes at Tickleberry’s
Route:
We will exit the park, and go up one block on Martin Street to the traffic light at Westminster.
Right on Westminster, until the 2nd traffic light (Power St).
Left on Power St. Straight through the next traffic light. You are now on Railway Avenue heading south.
Look for Moduline Homes on your right. Turn right at the Skaha Ford sign. (Parkway Place). Turn right into the Moduline Homes parking lot.
We will regroup at Moduline Homes.
Once regrouped, we will leave in 4 - 5 groups to minimize our impact on traffic.
Exit Moduline turning right.
You are now on the Channel Parkway. Look for the Apex Alpine Ski Resort turnoff sign at the next intersection. Turn right onto Green Mountain Road.
Please watch the speed limit through the Penticton Indian Band lands.
We will be on winding roads for 34.7 km (21.5 miles). The only major intersection is a right turn to Apex Mountain at 20 km (12.5 miles). Go Straight. Do not turn right.
Look for a short section of black rock hills on your left at 29 km (18 miles). Sometimes a few of these rocks end up on the road. Go slow and keep a safe distance between SSRs. Once past the black rock section, enjoy the curves again. You will likely only be hampered by the occasional wild horse or deer straying onto the road.
We will reach Highway 3A
Turn left onto 3A. At 3.7 km (2.3 miles) there will be a Provincial rest stop on your right. The parking is good so we will enjoy a brief stop for those who would like to check out the facilities and take some photos
Right onto Highway 3A for 3.4 km (2.1 miles)
Look for the turnoff to Twin Lakes Golf Course on your right.
Turn right at the Golf course entrance.
Travel 3.4 km (2.1 miles) on Twin Lakes Road
Turn left onto White Lake road.
You will see some large dish antennas ahead of the intersection with Fairview Road
Go Straight, towards the antennas. DO NOT turn right on Fairview.
This is DRAO, the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, which uses radio waves instead of visible light to study stars and the universe.
We will pass St Andrews by the Lake on your left.
We will rejoin Highway 97. Turn right onto 97 heading South.
We will enter Okanagan Falls. The highway will turn right (south).
About 2 blocks south on highway 97, look for Tickleberrys on your left. We will be turning left across traffic into their parking lot. Tickleberrys will have ice cream, fudge, kettle corn, and a gift shop. A bag of their chocolate covered blueberries or raspberries is always a good thing for road emergencies.
They have a large parking lot north and south of the building. If it is full, drive back north across the bridge and park on the street. It’s a short walk back.
We will likely be separated by highway traffic as we exit right to go back north on the highway. Immediately after the highway takes a left turn, we will use the parking lane on the right to regroup. Once everyone is back with us, we will travel a short distance on Highway 97, turning right at the IGA shopping center, and right again at the lakefront park.
This will put us on Eastside road for a pleasant winding cruise back into Penticton.
Once past the north edge of Skaha Lake, look for a park area with a kiddie water park and a fountain on a pond.
Turn left onto Lee Avenue just past the water park.
Turn right at Skaha Lake road. We are now on the main road into downtown Penticton.
It will be impossible to stay together through the traffic lights, but we are headed north towards the hotel and Rotary Park, our starting point.
There is a double left turn lane at Main and Westminster, one block from the hotel. The Bank of Montreal, HSBC and Credit union are on this corner.
Two Options at this point
1 - Turn left on Westminster, and take the right turn onto Riverside, the last right turn before crossing the small bridge. This will be an opportunity for a “Steal the Show” drive by past the Sicamous onto Lakeshore Drive, which should be very busy with 2 way cruising traffic and heavy pedestrian traffic. The going might be a bit slow on Lakeshore, but lots of cars to look at.
Rotary Park will be ahead to the left, and we will re-enter the park at the same entrance.
You have the option at this stage of continuing to cruise at your leisure, or return to the park for some lawn chair time, or walking the strip.
2 - For those who have cruised enough and want a quick return to the park, you can
a) keep going north 1 block to the entrance into Rotary instead of turning left at Westminster. There could be a wait getting through to the park. There will be a lot of traffic on Lakeshore, therefore a tough stop sign to get through.
b) If it looks congested ahead, turn right onto Front Street. and take the second left (after the sidewalk restaurants ) back onto lakeshore. The left turn is BEFORE the bridge over Penticton Creek If you miss the turn, you can loop around the traffic circle a few hundred feet up, and double back.

My SSR: Silver with Pink Ghost Flames, Pink Lettering & Flares with PINK Bow Ties on Rims!
the Cruise was the MOST FUN OF ALL !!!
However, it will be easier with another pair of eyes!!! Generally I'm good at navigating, but with no way to watch where we're going, not easy to be solo!!
I just tried to enter this trip in my Garmin. The darn thing started smoking and the my British anouncer started to wine and said "Are you kidding me?. Might have to get a smarter Garmin.

Between Garmin, a map of the 'city streets' parts of the route, the written directions (which, by the way, is the ONLY thing timed rallies use), four stops to regroup, and 50 SSRs ahead and behind, there ought to be a way to get from here to there.
I even went out and hand picked the route to keep the major turns to a minimum. Quite a bit of it is the route we did last summer, and several of us went back to do it again on Sunday. We avoid rural residential areas for the most part, so the SSRs with throaty exhausts get to use up some testosterone.
We'll just try to play nice going past the two golf courses.
