Pics from Port Townsend Run

Here are some pics from todays Port Townsend Run of the Northwest Pacific SSR Fanantics, there were 17 or 18 SSRs there. First pic is the USS Nimitz being moved into the mothball docks at Bremerton,WA while we were waiting for most of the SSRs to rendevoux at Port Orchard. Second pic is several of the mothball fleet carriers there. Pics 3 and 4 are when we rendevouxed with the rest of the SSRs at the floating bridge.

Spring Opener 2010>> a GREAT Success>>>>>>

Hello to all Fanatics out there in "R" Land: Well as planned our day run to Port Townsend was a great success,we only had three no shows,so eighteen SSR's and one corvette so that was pretty darn good IMO,given the weather was a typical March windy and over cast with sun breaks etc.
Most of us arrived at 9:00AM, our meeting place(KCBank),while waiting for our Oregonians to arrive,we had a unexpected pleasure, of watching the USS NIMITZ Aircraft carrier being berthed for a temporary stay at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.Man she is huge,it had a full compliment of crew and aircraft, usually the aircraft are flown off to a land base before coming to PSNS,probably just needed an oil change? Anyway, you can see pictures of this huge floating city with all the many aircraft on her flight deck.
We left P/O at 9:45 as planned and headed north to the Hood Canal floating bridge,to our surprise the area where we were to meet Sue and her group of seven ssr's was blocked off with concrete blocks so Scott(truflames) quickly improvised and had them waiting for us on the opposite end(eastside) along the water edge where we met up with them and had a short meet & greet
and discussed our itinerary for Port Townsend etc.We didn't see any raker's car club members at the Safeway parking lot so we headed straight to the Bay View Restaurant for a delicious and enjoyable lunch. We spent a little over an hour there, simply enjoying each others company, meanwhile I had a couple of 2005 SSR Brochures that were given to me by a former loving Fanatic, Len Martin,so there were seven fanatics with "05"s,had them pick a number from 1-10 and My co-pilot picked the two numbers and two lucky fanatics went away with like new condition brochures. We all left the restaurant and headed down the street to visit a very unique piece of automotive history, yes,Bergstrom's Garage/Museum,it's an old 30,40,50's
parts house, with everything from glass display cases with all kinds of auto parts, door handels, mirrors, taillights, dome lites, starters, shop manuals, hub caps
galore, shift knobs, rubber pedal pads,oh,the list goes on and on! For me it reminded me of the old fashion automotive parts houses back in my Home town of Calumet ,Michigan,my buddy's Dad owned one that was very similar to Bergstrom's Garage,he had four or five classic cars in the shop too,but the real site to see was the parts display and how real it was indicative of the early years.
We stayed there maybe half an hour and the guests in the Corvette(natives of Port Townsend)and personal friends of Glenn and Carol Whaley, took us on a quick tour of the hillside of P/T and then led us to the old Historical site of Fort Worden,an old military compound with old bunkers that were used during world war I &II to help protect Indian island, amunition depot from any type of attack from the germans,Japanese
etc.We all pulled into a concrete parking area there at FT Worden and looked around at the huge bunkers and the general maritime landscape. We then said our good-byes and til we meet again, God bless one another and keep us safe until next time we gather our special unique SSR's in penticton BC.
this coming June>>>Toni and I wish to thank all that participated in our Spring opener, you all made it a success and fun time that will forever be recorded in our memory banks of good times!!Thanks PACNW Fanatics!!!

PS: Special thanks to Glenn and Sue for their efforts as always,God Bless!

Thumbs up Mostly TOPLESS.......

Great turnout - Three from Oregon, Three from British Columbia - Eleven from western Washington.

Here are a few photos to put in our Scrapbook for the 5th year of the Northwest SSR Events....... (4 of the original group Hal and I put together!!)
After lunch at the BayView, a Corvette "Friend" lead us through the town which is filled with fabulous Victorian homes, and on to famous Fort Worden which was home to the US Army serving our great country. It's buildings can be rented for conventions and the like. A Dirigible Hanger peeks out from under the cover of dense fir trees......

Admiralty Inlet was considered so strategic to the defense of Puget Sound in the 1890s that three forts, Fort Worden, Fort Flagler, and Fort Casey, were built at the entrance with huge guns creating a "Triangle of Fire" that could theoretically thwart any invasion attempt by sea. Fort Worden, on the Quimper Peninsula, at the extreme northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, sits on a bluff near Port Townsend, anchoring the northwest side of the triangle.
Fort Worden was one of three artillery installations built around Admiralty Inlet at the beginning of the 20th century to protect Puget Sound from hostile naval activity. Though its guns never fired a hostile shot and were removed during World War I for use in Europe, Fort Worden was used for training a variety of military personnel and for other defense purposes. These three posts, established in the late 1890s, became the first line of a fortification system known as the "Triangle of Fire" and were designed to prevent a hostile fleet from reaching such targets as the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett. You can still see the gun emplacements and parts of the "submarine net" at Fort Casey and Fort Flagler.

Rendezvous just off the Hood Canal Bridge
Lined up to take over Port Townsend with Gusto
Tim & Mary - longest distance - Sheridan, Oregon
Wayne, Sandy - Langley BC and Mark - home grown Fanatic

Well, now I have been able to figure out where everyone disappeared to. We were in the classic car store still and did not realize everyone else headed to Fort Worden. Anyway, I just wanted to thank Hal,Sue,Glenn etc for all your efforts in putting this event together so we could all get our "R's" spiffed up for the new years events. I am glad to hear that Hal had a successful heart surgery and hoping he has a complete and quick recovery. We will not be able to attend the Penticton run again this year because of a conflict (my daughter is due to have her baby then and we will be flying to Florida to welcome another grand child into our midsts. It was great seeing everyone and meeting other fanatics for the 1st time. Til we meet again on our next adventure

Thank you Hal for organizing a great outing to start off the year. Peter and myself had a great time cruising with our top down and seeing everyone once again.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and glad to hear you are doing well.
