visiting the Pacific Northwest, geocaching style

I will be in Washington, outside Seattle, over the 4th weekend... we'll be in town for the geocaching "GeoWoodstock" and associated events. Then we will be heading to Idaho, and west through Oregon before returning to Seattle for our flight home. Unfortunately, I have not yet won the Lottery, so I could not, 1) afford to have my SSR shipped over for the trip, or 2) take enough time from work to make the trip there and back in my SSR (oh, that would be so much fun!) So, it's a rental ride for us.

This trip will also be a personal achievement for me, in that by the end of the trip, I will have visited all of the 48 contiguous United States. Maybe someday I will make it to Alaska and Hawaii, and see all 50!

I will keep a lookout for SSRs, so if you see someone in a rental ride waving hysterically at you, and gazing longingly at your roadster, it might be me!

I have finally recovered enough to post about our trip. Whew. Three states - parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho - in roughly eight days...well...the first 48 hours were in the Seattle area alone. We covered a lot of territory!

Unfortunately, I did not have time to contact TickledPink, which was a disappointment to me.

I had forgotten how long the days are "up north." Between the sun rising at something that seemed like 4:30 AM (OK, slight exaggeration ) and the sky not becoming fully dark until something that seemed like 11:00 PM (OK, slight exaggeration ) I was not getting a lot of sleep - why waste daylight, right?!!

But, with all to see and do, there was still time for a sighting! While stopped along the road, geocaching in a deep lava bed, on the Carey, ID side of Craters of the Moon National Monument, Joe (aka joebids) said, "Look!" He pointed as a drove past us.

I so enjoyed the views of the sound and the lakes around Washington, the trees, the giant ferns, the green grasses, the mountains, the glaciers on the peaks, the seemingly endless flows of lava in Idaho, the cooler temperatures and/or the lower humidity levels, the broad vistas on the western prairies of the Columbia Plateau, the ocean views from an overlook on the Oregon coastline, and even the occasional puff of smoke on Mt. St. Helens (kinda scary). I had a great time on the trip. It is a beautiful part of the country. I could have stayed there a few weeks. I need to win the Lottery so I can return whenever I like!

I was sorry to miss you on your visit !!!

Vicki !

The Seattle Times newspaper had a wonderful article about your group Geocaching in the Northwest....... I seriously studied all the details and was so hoping you had time to stop for a second and call !! It sounds as though you had quite an adventure planned, and for those of us who only use the GPS to find ONE ANOTHER (SSRs, I mean), you would certainly be the expert I wish I had to refer to whenever my Garmin OR Magellan won't accept the information I try to LOAD !!! I can't imagine a PRO GPS USER like yourself ever ending up - like I did a few years back - at the Phoenix Airport Passenger Terminal from utter disobedience and "Continual Recalculating" !!! Guess I could use some lessons !

I am very pleased your grand Northwest adventure in my part of the world was so spectacular - as I remember, the weather really co-operated while you were here ! I will look forward to your Winning Lottery ticket and a return visit !

Sue
