Looking at this for a project vehicle for our son(he's 11 1/2) have to get started early
It runs, has a v8 engine, all orginal parts. but needs some elect. work under the hood. Needs paint and interior. he is asking $2500. Body looked good no visable rust!
What do you think? Good deal? Leave it alone?

'79 is not a classic body or engine, but if he likes the style, this is a good price. You can buy a complete GM spec wiring harness from HOT WIRES in Garland ( ex-GM electric engineer) cheap and it is completely color coded with good instructions. The engine is probably a 305 and parts are cheap and easy to get. Solid frame. Just test drive for other issues.
If it was a 69... I'd say buy it!
I'm old school and I think he needs a classic... Sooooo
Save the SSR for him ...or get him a 69'.
I didn't like the newer styles, but like I said I'm old school (besides... when mine was 18 I got him a 69'el and it was "our" project)
for what it's worth...
Bruce tub
I agree with Bruce. (great minds think alike) But if you can find one from the mid 60's, then that even better.
Looking around through the years. 66-69 you find total restored or total rust buckets, so far anyway.
We are still looking, he like the chevell, camaro (who doesn't) and the El! Boy's got good taste anyway

The late 70's /early 80's G-bodys are great cars for a first build project. There are still lot's of these in salvage yards to get parts from, there is an abundance of aftermarket parts and performance add ons for these. There are cheap factory style chassis and brake upgrades avilable that came on Camaros, Monte CarloSS , Buick GN etc, plus they are easy to work on and comfortable and fun to drive. Having a 60's model would be nice but the entry level cars are pretty beat up and the nicer ones still need lots of upgrades to make them SAFE and comfortable. And remember, this IS an old car to an 11 year old. If you were born in 1957 and got to fix up a car that was 28 years old when you were 11 you might be wrenching on a 1940 Ford. It's just a matter of perspective, I say let the boy make his choice, it will have to captivate his interest till he is ready to drive it.
I'd like to stand up for El Camino owners everwhere. I spent a year and a half rebuilding an '81 Elky and I drive it allmost every day.
My '81 started our life as a V6 3sp SS and with the additional of a 350, muncie 4 speed, and a 373 rear end a little paint and interior work it runs and looks great.
Parts are plentiful, and good starter projects can be had for $2,000.
One caution, El Caminos like most trucks are light in back end and a little too much right foot especially in the rain can have you looking the wrong way in a hurry. If your building one for a teen keep the horsepower down around 200.
I agree we have to keep the HP down since I know my son won't drive slow
and the plus of there being only two seats keeps the passenger numbers to a min. I like that too.
I think that since he will be wrenching as much as possible that this one will be easy for him to work on, and like some of you stated, parts are still available.
He was excited when I told him about it and we will take him to see it!
He wants to paint it himself I am sure he has some flames and skulls in mind

El Camino project, pros and cons
My daily driver for many years was a 1969 with a 454, great truck with factory air and disc brakes, was a money pit and could never stop it leaking. I finally sold it when I bought my 1986.
This was the best El Camino I had as a daily driver, black with all trims and emblems removed and powered by a GM ZZ4 crate motor, once set up on a dyno this truck was fast, here in Florida all emissions cataylst were removed and with a dual exhaust and headrers sounded awesome. Sadly one of our cars had to be sold when the SSR arrived so this found a new owner.
They are easy to work on, parts plentiful, rear window is hard to find,in my opinion make a great project and you can haul and tow stuff.
Front edge of the hood can rust out and also rear fender wells and behind the rear of the doors, mine was rust free.
Still have the El Camino bug as own a 1960 Turquoise that was originally a 6 cylinder. now has modified 350, disc brakes custom interior and been totally rebuilt, great driver..
Like driving the SSR so much so do think sometimes of selling as it has no AC and so does not get driven much in Floridas summers. however is useful for carrying stuff that will not fit in the SSR without removing bed cover.
I agree we don't want to buy a fix er uper every few years. The car of his dreams would be Lambogini Or a 69 SS Camaro Nick has high hopes of being a Car Artist, so he will need to know how to take them apart, and how to put them back, going this route will give him the opportunity and I think fixed up and painted we could sell it for more later or he might keep it forever who knows I knew you car guys would know

Yep, the el camino is cool. I've owned 2 69's one an ss 396. the SS took me to wash dc and back to Florida then to NAS Lemoore, Calif. and back to Florida back in the early 80's. Couple trips to Atlanta. I still miss it. I've been watching for a 79-86 like you and seems like the $2500 is in the ballpark. I like the look of the 79 grill. I say go for it.
I had a 1970 El Camino 350CU/350 Turbo automatic. I put all the SS emblems and a functioning cowl induction hood on it. I bought it used in 1970 for $2800.00. I put 205,000 miles on it and sold it in 1996 for $3700.00. It was still in great condition when I sold it 26 years later. I don't think you can beat an ElCamino. Not from my experience any how.

Be sure to check the frame for rust. They are bad about that on the 78 thru 87. Pay close attention to the part the body mount mounts to. That area seems to rust the worst. I have owned 67 (new), 69, 74, 78 and 86. They body shop that fixed the dent in my SSR rear fender is working on a 59 with a 348 and 4 speed. I would like to have either a 60 or a 69 thru 72.

Gave my son on his 16th birthday a 1968 Camaro which was also 16 years old. Greatest gift and thing I could have done. He got involved with cars and other kid's with cars of this caliper and kept him out of trouble. He chromed everything and won many trophy's are car shows with it. He still has the car.
