Americans Drive

According to the Federal Highway Administration Americans drove about 3.03 TRILLION miles in 2006. This is the highest figure ever recorded for the nation and represents the 27th consecutive year of increases. The figure is roughly double the amount driven in 1980 and four times the amount driving in 1957.

Total vehicles (including motorcycles) registered in 2006 = 244,165,686. Total Population (today) is estimated at 304,374,748

I edited my post because I thought we had only exceeded an average of 1.0 vehicles per household in the '80s. Turns out it as much earlier. I found a link that had a table with some interesting stats:

Do More Vehicles Make More Miles: A snapshot analysis of the NHTS 2001

Basically, we're increasing the amount we drive annually in addition to having more cars per household being driven those greater amounts.

And now - the REST of the story

"Americans drove 1.4 billion fewer highway miles in April than they did in April 2007, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday."

This was apparently the 6th month in a row that posted significant drops over the same period a year ago.
