We spent a week in Kino Bay Mexico. We had a condo on the beach. Hated the drive down there, seemed like we followed livestock trucks on a tiny 2 lane road the whole way Once we got settled in, it was nice and relaxing......I do remember that there were lots of shells and sand dollars on the beach each morning Food was good and our money went a long way!

Been to Cancun twice loved it the first time...second time hated it. Haven't returned since.
Didn't care for the red light green light to pass thru security at the airport
Everyone except me came back with monosumo's revenge (the parasites that are in the water) They were sick for weeks.
I'm sure there are other areas that would be wonderful to vacation in but I'd rather go to the Keys

We've been to area's on both the east and west coast. The east side has by far the nicest sand/beaches. We never did come up with a favorite, went somewhere different every time. Cozumel and Isla Mujeras has great snorkeling. We never met a MARGARITA we didn't like. I have never been sick there. My moto - start and end the day with tequila, it'll fix what ails ya
Seems like a lot of Canadians are ending up "falling off the balcony" and ending up dead. So, I think we may try Hawaii this January instead. Sandy

Have done the Mexican Riviera (Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Los Cabos) TEN TIMES on cruise ships. Particularly love Puerto Vallarta and fly there when I can't cruise there. Stay south of the Rio Cuale River where all the vacationing Mexican families stay . . . very reasonable, 100 pesos ($10) a night, puter center on the ground floor ($3 for an hour on the internet and you get a cup of coffee and a croissant !),all old furniture, but you could eat off the floor. Eat at one of a zillion quaint little mom and pop restaurants (some with only 4 or 5 tables) for breakfast and lunch, great sports bar the NO NAME CAFE has everything for the evening dinner. The night life has some of the hottest discos imaginable.
Love Los Cabos also. Almost bought a condo there a couple years ago. The Mexican people are the salt of the earth. The average Mexican makes about 100 pesos a day ($9) and would go out of his/her way to make your stay comfortable in Mexico. Great people. But yah gotta get away from the over-priced AMERICAN hotels with rude Mexican staffs and employees that speak perfect English and hate Americans.
A wife ago, I considered a home right on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California to you gringos). Then 2 or 3 bedrooms right on the beach - $125,000 ! ! The only drawback to owning real estate in Mexico is you had better be prepared to just walk away from it if "trouble" starts in Mexico.
May have to skip my annual birthday cruise in October, but am looking very closely at a lower Mexican Riviera cruise around Thanksgiving (the same ports I visited with UNCLE FOCKS DUCK SOUP). Acapulco, Zhuantenejo, Ixtapa, and Manzanillo again.
I go back to Isla Mujeras when I can get time off. Love Taxco and San Miguel de Allende. Took some extension courses, Art, silver smithing and Photography one summer and became a gringo. I recommend Mexico for the Maya ruins too. Beautiful. I have been impressed with food in San Antonio but the traffic.

I have been all over Mexico for business and pleasure, and spent a great deal of time in Monterrey. It is the 3rd largest city in Mexico, and as far as I can see, the ONLY one with a true middle class. ((others are have's and have not's, that simple).
Monterrey has great restaurants, and hotels, and sits in the center of a bowl surrounded on 3 sides, by the Sierra Madre mountains. The Mexican food there is authentic (DUH), and have found nothing in the US that matches the top restaurants in Monterrey (my fave Pancea, and Senior Tanakas, a Mexican Sushi restaurant that rivels anything in NY or Chicago!)).
Also Guadalahara is really nice for the climate, which is relatively constant year around. But both locations tend to get a bunch of rain in the rainy season, and there is NO drainage. Don't get caught there when its raining!
My 2 cents worth.

I've been to Cancun also. I found it to be just like Miami Beach with a couple more Mexicans. I don't care for touristy areas (and look where I live!) (wait, that's probably why...). Rented a car and headed south along the coast. Now that was fun. Lots of beautiful archaeological sites and beaches. Tulum is beautiful... and south of that you don't see alot of tourists.
