I booked the car train to Florida for the upcomming Keys run. Leaving Nov. 7th from Loreton,VA. Returning Nov,13 from Sanford, FL.
Once arriving in Florida we are driving strait thru to the Keys.
This save 900 miles of driving one way plus you stay on the train overnite. 17 hour ride arriving in Sanford around 9 am.
So far Rebel is also joining us. Anybody interest can PM me.
We can start the party early on the train
Reservation made
Ratical- Doug & Margo
Rebel-Ed & Brenda

Train
You will not regret taking the train to fl....did the reverse with my 57 chevy enroute to my 50th class reunion in maine....food was great....had a cabin with amenities....they took great care of the 57 and yes it is enclosed....and yes a great way to start the fun early!!would not hesitate to do it again....chuckstr
It was 4 1/2 tanks of gas to maggie, around town and home. On train you save gas, no motel two nights, and some basic food is supplyed on train with your ride ticket. And I get to Hassel Doug "hotdog" Evens (RaticalSSR) as he's trapped. priceless!

What a great idea!
No idea if the same service is available in Western Canada, or Western US. (just looked - it is not)
I would love to attend some of the functions but the main ones are so far away and the idea of attending without Kate seems to defeat a bit of the purpose. Driving the SSR is a hoot but unless you have lots of time to mosey along and benefit from the journey, cramming several thousand not so enjoyable miles on the SSR over a few day span is not what I want to do.
The cost of this train service is minimal compared to the cost of driving, yet you have your SSR at the event, leisurely viewed the scenery from the train (more than you likely see with eyes glued to the road), had good meals and accommodations. (No worry about DUI's!)
Being able to travel as a small group - Great concept!

Ah, I'm Just Truckin' With Ya!
We did the auto train to the keys. I was very impress in the way they took care of our trucks. Once you arrived there they would video tape your vehicle, put down floor mats and cover your seat. The truck was loaded in the train car in less then 10 minutes. There are 6 rows of cars with 5 cars in each row. Each car holds 10 vehicles, 5 up & 5 down. So they carried 300 vehicles and well over 400 passengers. The train is over 3/4 of a mile long and is the longest train in the US. You must be there before 3:00 in the afternoon with the train leaving at exactly 4 pm. You are assigned seats when you arrive so if you are traveling with someone you all want to check in at the same time. We boarded the train at 2:30, settled in and then proceeded to the lounge car where we quenched our thirst.
We had a very good meal for Supper and a continental breakfast which is included . We arrived ahead of schedule in Sanford ,FL and back in our truck an hour later. Rebel did have an incident were he had a flat tire when it came off the train but Amtrak was going to take care of any expenses that he incured.
The return trip was just the reverse and went well. Only difference was we got a sleeper car on the way back. If I the chance I would do this again in a heartbeat. Our trip cost $1000.00 with a sleeper car one way. Prices do vary depending on the time of year.
Total miles on the train 1800
cost of gas for those miles $360.00
Motel room for 2 nite $240.00
Meals $150.00
Approx. total $800.00
Plus wear & tear on the vehicle and bodies. Not to mention the company of good friends= PRICELESS

I've wanted to do this. I was thinking of taking the R to the Keys in May. Amtrak seems like a sweet deal. And I'm glad to hear they took care of your baby. That was my major concern with doing it.
