Carving Pumpkins & Harvest Decorating Ideas

I like to get a little crafty around this time of the year.....mostly due to the fabulous colors that can be displayed around the home.

On MSN I read about a different way to carve pumpkins...... Most of these designs were created with linoleum-cutting tools (find sets for less than $10 at art stores or Websites such as misterart.com), which can be used to carve a motif on the surface of the pumpkin, rather than cutting all the way through. You can draw free hand use stencils or transfer a drawing to the pumpkin.

These are so pretty......I'm gonna gave to try my luck at one

Fresh Pumpkin Centerpiece

Fresh Pumpkin Centerpiece

STEP 1

Define your basket and handle design with masking tape, then cut out the two wedges with a sharp paring knife. Remove seeds and pulp with an ice cream paddle or a scoop. OXO kitchen tools offer a comfortable grip.

STEP 2

Peel off the masking tape, and place a water-saturated block of floral foam inside the pumpkin. Insert flower stems into the foam, creating contrasts in texture and color as you go. Add cool water each day, and enjoy your arrangement all week.

I have used pumpkins as serving dishes. Prepare the pumpkin by cutting a hole in the top, and cleaing the inside of seeds and such. Warm the pumpkin using warm water, dry the inside, then scoop the food (such as casseroles or soups) into the prepared pumpkin, and set it on the table. I use the top as a lid.
