They are definately louder in Chicago that in Detroit!!! I could not believe how loud they are in Chicago! My Mother used to say when you first heard them sing it was the start of Hay-Fever season and 6wks to the first frost!

we don't get the same kind in CA but can remeber them when I was a kid...one year they completely covered the trees in our yard and were really loud...I always thought they were pretty neat to catch...and they sure beat the "stink bug" infestation we had several years later...you couldn't take a step without squishing one...yew!

Cicada's do make a lot of noise, but it is simply their mating call. Now if you really want to see something,.. wait til one or two of them fly into a big ol bug light. :willy Now that's entertainment!

I used to hear them all over the locust trees in my back yard when I lived in Davenport, Iowa. Sort of a zooo! zooo! zooo! sound to them. Ugly too.
I read that article. This is the part I'd never have any desire to do:
Freelance writer David Hammond runs the LTHForum, a Chicago-based Internet site devoted to culinary matters, and his "foodie" friends want to see what the cicadas taste like.
The insects are eaten in other parts of the world, with descriptions of the taste ranging from shrimp to canned asparagus to not much at all.
No recipe has been decided upon yet, but Hammond assumes they will be fried and perhaps accompanied by a dip or salsa.
"Honestly, they'll probably go down easier that way," he said. "Who knows? Maybe we'll love it. We may have to travel around the country as infestations occur."
I find it amazing that these animals sleep for 13 years, wake up for 30 days, and then die.......
I bet they're mating during all those years that we don't see them ... then come flying out looking for more Viagra to get another 17 years worth of you know what. Some make it, some don't.
