ST. GEORGE - Aviation officials are investigating a crash involving a small airplane used by a skydiving company that occurred Saturday in Mesquite.
The plane was approaching the Mesquite Municipal Airport for a landing at about 12:30 p.m. after taking a group of skydivers up. An unknown mishap caused the plane to exit the end of the runway, cross Kitty Hawk Drive, sail over a small ravine and travel down a small hillside onto the 17th hole of the Canyons Course of the Oasis Golf Club, said Mesquite Police Department Public Information Officer Jeffrey Smith.
The Cessna Caravan involved in the crash was being used by Skydive Mesquite, but owned by another skydiving company, Smith said
Both the pilot and lone passenger suffered minor injuries, Smith said, although the passenger was taken to Mesa View Regional Hospital for treatment and then released.
One of the plane's occupants is from Utah, and the other is from another state, Smith said, but no identities will be released pending an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
"All the landing gear was torn off," Smith said. "The propeller was sheared off. ... The plane suffered damage to the front nose and suffered partial damage to the right wing."
A certified pilot responded to the scene to ensure that all fuel valves were turned off, and no fuel was spilled as a result of the crash, he said.
The incident is the second mishap connected to Skydive Mesquite this year.
In October, one of the company's skydiving instructors and an elderly student participating in a tandem jump died when their parachutes failed to deploy correctly.
