Dallas to Phoenix road trip with Flame Truck # 4 04.22.11
I'll be arriving in Dallas this Friday to pick up Flame Truck # 4 around 11:30 AM. Paceguy is picking me up at DFW, and after picking up the truck will be coming back to the Grapevine area to have lunch with a few of the local Fanatics - not sure what time. If you're in the area, I'd like to see y'all!
Contact Paceguy or BYERS for the ETA.....
I plan to spend the night Friday night in Roswell NM if time permits, and try to take a few pics of the Flame Truck at the Very Large Array radio telescope site in Socorro NM on Saturday on the way home. Should be home by 6:00 PM Saturday MST.
Thanks so much to Jay (PACEGUY) for having the confidence in Thumper and I to be the custodians of this very special SSR! I bid on this same truck at BJ Las Vegas in '08, Jay was there and phoned me with all the information about it. I went to bed that night thinking I had bought it then, only to find out I was not the bidder at my maximum bid, which is the amount it sold for.
I'm not afraid to drive it and put miles on it, because, to me, that is the fun of owning an SSR. Even if it means it will be worth less in the future, don't care.
I promise this truck will be taken very good care of, as all of our SSR's have been. I have promised Jay that he has first right of refusal should we decide to sell it in the future - maybe by the time Jay's kids are grown and have left the nest that will entice our good friend Jay to come back to the SSR community!
My SSR: Was - 2006 Slingshot Yellow: Final Production Run #23343 Born Feb 21, 2006 (Moved on to a good home)
It's really nice to hear that you closed a deal. As the new custodian I'm sure you will treat it well and ensure it's around in better condition than when you got it for the next owner - even if it's a LONG time down the road.
Try not to collect any "performance awards" on your way home - even if your SSR is not exactly inconspicuous!! Congrats!
I decided to avoid I-40 through Witchita Falls, TX.....when I purchased BOB (our /) from Classic Chevrolet in '07 (BYERS works there and helped with the sale immensely), I got a speeding ticket. Every little town in TX has a Dairy Queen and a cop.....
When the west coast contingent was on it's way to Kerrville on it's way to the 2009 International Rally through West Texas, Mikey and I left the pack at around 150 + MPH and it still was never ending!

With all the Dairy Queens & Dunkin Donuts feeding the State Troopers, you might as well sign up for online traffic school in case you need it after you get home.

If my good friend Mike in AZ was my wingman on the way home, WE would be home much sooner (assuming his lovely bride Debbie was asleep, reading, etc).

While I agree that Texas was never ending...... I do need to clear up a couple things.
Doug and I did leave the pack - true. I was on his wing for a bit and discovered that the aerodynamics of the SSR pull up every bit of grit from the roadbed at 130. I was 8 car lengths behind him when I pulled into the left lane and I still have the paint chips to prove it. I think that I was at 135 when Doug passed me. I couldn't keep up with Hellvis. That was when I decided that I HAD TO HAVE a supercharger too.
That was a long ride thru Texas, but traveling with Doug and Smokey did seem to make the time pass a little faster.
Enjoy your drive home Doug. It's a gorgeous truck.
It helps a lot to have an escort picking up radar a couple miles in front , Im glad you brought that trip up Focks that was really fun!! Doug do you need me to get out front for this trip ,I can stay in front of the pace car.
Congratulations and best of luck on your trip home Doug. I have a spare Valentine 1 you can borrow for a little extra warning if you would like.
Thanks Greg, but I'm not going to set any land speed records in this SSR.
I had several phone calls today from friends asking me if I was excited now that it's down to the wire.....I was so busy at work the last few days that I haven't had the chance to get excited.
Location: About as far East as you can go before you hit salt water.

My SSR: 2005 Allstate 400 Pace SSR #2 of 2 Built
Don't get caught running with those strobes on Doug.
I don't know about Texas, New Mexico and Arizona but it is a big fine up here.
Have a safe trip.

Does that mean I should drive mine everywhere instead of hauling it around in the trailer and not worry about the mileage for the next owner.

It's kind of like Kohl's. He will be coming home with a new outfit. The important thing is to tell him how nice it looks and praise him for being savvy enough to buy it on sale!
