Dyson Animal (DC-17)
We bought ours brand new from Best Buy one year ago. We have 3 dogs (2 medium sized, one large) that shed - this was one of the best household appliance purchases either of us has ever made!
The only complaint we have is that it retains scents - if we don't clean it after every use, it smells like a wet dog from the dog hair we vacuum up. We learned to wash the filter in the washing machine once a month (don't dry it in the dryer, though!), and to thoroughly clean the dustbins after every use with PineSol or some other scented cleanser. Let the individual pieces dry thoroughly before putting them back together. This sounds like a pain in the butt, but this vacuum cleaner does the job.
Not sure if I would buy a refurbished one, but might be worth a try. Especially at 1/2 the cost of a brand new one.

I've had one for years. It's the best vac made. I had two Electrolux and a Kirby before this. To properly test out the Dyson, I gave the carpet a good vacuuming with the Electrolux and then immediately went over the same carpet with the Dyson. It pulled out enough to fill an Electrolux bag with what the Electrolux had been leaving.
Here is the image that I have up on Amazon.com:
Most of my family and many of my friends now own them as well. I think I must have "sold" a truckload of them for Mr. Dyson.
I have two beagles so having an excellent vacuum cleaner is the way to go!
