Well... I'd say it's hard for me to come up with favorites... I think it's much easier for me to come up with actors I can't stand.

Doug mentioned Jack Elam. The guy was great.
The start of Once Upon a Time in The West when they were waiting for the train there was a 5 minute sequence iwth a constant closeup of Elams face while he was trying to shoo a nagging fly off his face without moving a muscle except facial. Priceless!!
This is highly entertaining in itself.
Other "character" actors that come to mind are Jason Robards and Richard Farnsworth.

Seems there is a difference of definition of character actors versus actor characters!

Character actors tend to be supporting actors, rather than lead actors.....
A few more -
Joe Pesci
Steve Buscemi
Dennis Farina

Richard Farnsworth.
One of the BEST character actors ever!
Was nominated for an oscar in 1999 for a movie about a man who traveled across several states on a lawnmower/tractor to visit his ailing brother.

Speaking of "Grease" I think one of the best parts was after the "Mooning" the comment was that they knew who they were cause the FBI had their pictures. Seems that is just what J. Edgar Hoover would have liked..............docrod
