General Chevy Transmission...or something... Question

My co-worked could use some advice. She has a 1995 Chevy Silverado pickup that has sentimental value (it belonged to her son, who died last year.)

The truck has a problem, which her husband and a mechanic believe to transmission related. The truck has an automatic transmission. She described the problem to me today as, "when the truck reaches 4th gear, it loses power."

The transmission was rebuilt. The truck still has the same problem.

Anyone able to offer any suggestions or advice before her husband hauls it to another shop for another attempt at a repair?

I agree with that. Is there a check engine light on at any time? And if she leaves it in 3rd , does it still loose power under load?

I know this isn't your truck but these are questions you can ask her.

Thank you, and trust me...I will pass along ANY suggestions and advice. The truck is important to her and she is frustrated by the inability to get it back on the road, running properly.

It sounds like it could possibly be a bad fuel pump or restricted fuel filter. The filter is the first place I would start, cheap and easy to get to.

I would tend to agree with greg on this.

The fuel filter is easily accesed under the cab. The fuel pump is in the tank. I have replaced few of these due to low pressure readings or failure. Common problem after 10 years or so.

Most of the time the owner rarely notices a performace problem (as it is gradual over time) till it won't get out of it's own way.

Start there before you take it in for tranny work again.

I agree with Greg that the fuel filter is probably the first pkace she should look..I didn't think of that. SSRTRUCK is right on the converter would probably throw a check engine light. sorry

As this would only cost a few $$, I agree to tackle this one first. The pump would be pricier and harder to fix (requires either pulling the bed up or dropping the tank), but is still way cheaper than a new tranny or cat.

I've been in a vehicle that had a bad converter. Ran fine for a bit and then just bogged down. As soon as you let off the gas, it "released" and would start behaving again, but only for a short time. Didn't really matter what gear it was in, but definitely worse in the high gears as it made the power loss that much worse.

A very simple test to isolate whether the fuel system is the issue, would be to simply floor the gas pedal in high gear when it is losing power. The trans. should downshift and the engine should go to max power. Of course if there's fuel delivery issues the engine will not respond. If it is the fuel system at fault it should be rpm sensitive.
