Hey Gang,
I might be getting a GPS for my birthday in a couple of weeks.
Which makes & models should I be looking at and comparing?
Garmin, TomTom, others? Best value for the money?
I have to admit that I know very little about any of them at this point.
Your advice and recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Depends on what you want. A base model should run $250 or less. If you want live traffic updates, bluetooth, etc., than it will be more.
I've got a Garmin, but according to Consumer Reports - there's not that much difference between the top three - Garmin, Magellan and Tom-Tom. I'd go with what's "on-sale".
My friend was in the store yesterday and mentioned a cheaper price than is listed so if there is a store near you check it out, other wise it is still a good price!

This is a new site that allows people to enter the lowest price for an item that they find anywhere! They have red, yellow, and green deals (red meaning there are no reviews or the merchant is shady, yellow meaning that some people like the merchant some don't, and green which means most people are happy with the merchant).
If you want the cheapest deal and this site lists it (it's still in beta production and lists less than 1000 items right now), the cheapest deal will be here
I am a current deal finder for the site and I can't believe some of the deals these people find!

Wow, I've been reading and researching.
A lot to learn.
Next, a trip to some local electronic stores to get a
better feel for the products and decide what
features I really need & want.
It looks like there are some very good
online sources to compare prices. I might buy from
an online source once I know what I want.
Thank you for your input and advice!
I'm going shopping!
I just picked up the Garmin 205W - $249 @ Circuit City - got me around the I-75 construction in Detroit real well a couple weeks ago....
Thanks! That's one that I am looking at. I also found a Garmin Nuvi 650 wide screen for $269.99 with free shipping at Circuit City on the website Wow_FCTR posted above.

When I bought the 205W, Circuit City had an offer and threw in a 'bean bag' mount for free. It's non-slip and sits right on the dash - easy to move from vehicle to vehicle... It's $40 at CC now...

I have a Magellan Maestro and am usually happy with it. However, if it get really hot or really cold the touch screen becomes very finicky. In both of my trips along I40 through New Mexico I have found it's maps to be lacking severely. This causes the computer some real issues and you end up with some very strange displays as indicated in the picture below.
Note the miles to the exit and the time. Care to compute that speed?

Just bought a new Garmin Nuvi 680 from Costco - returning it - went on a business trip to Mobile a couple of weeks back - had to visit three addresses only had one of them - one address was 2 years old - not on the system, another address 7 years old not on the system another address 25 years old - was on the system. didn't have my hotel on the system which was over two years old. Has live traffic updates and never been given any direction by the system on this and three times now found myself stuck in traffic. Just last week starting having trouble finding the satellites - took over ten minutes on one occasion and asked me if I was inside while driving along top down - must have a dud because everyone speaks so highly of this model. Magellan customer service is spoken of widely on web sites for being worse than useless - good unit until you have trouble with it or try to update it according to the web sites. Will either swap out unit or get a less expensive Garmin unit.

Magellan 800 works fine. Also has downloadable updates from Magellan to stay current with your travels. I believe most GPS systems are that way. Paid $300 for it 2.5 years ago.

Flying Dog, if you get a Garmin make sure you get the W version and the bean bag mount. I have a Garmin 255W and so far so good.
I am sure you have been on the Garmin web site, but if not they have a comparsion chart of all there products that shows the have and have nots of the models that you want to compare.
I have been using the Garmin products in the planes since early 90's and have good results.
