Does anybody know what kind of critter would dig this type of hole up next to a basement wall. Look how much dirt got diplaced! It was dug on either Sat or Sun night because it was not there on Sat afternoon. Don't know about Sun as I wasn't well enough to go outside on Sun. It was also eating the tomatoes two of which are about 36 inches above the ground. It only eat half and leaves the rest (for me I suppose). I don't think Skunks dig like that do they. We have smelled Skunk a few mornings last couple weeks, but that's not unusuall as the sub borders the Red Run Drain (rain water overflow and sewer plant discharge river). We have also seen possums but I didn't think they would dig like that. Oz is a little stumpted as to what kind of Critter it might be.

No paw prints. The area where the tomatos are is only 15" wide and the tomatos are in large planters with weeds on the ground around them and the rest is grass. The dirt that got thrown up is vey loose and sandy and therefore does not hold any paw print shapes.

That looks and sounds exactly like what my pesky little ground squirrels do around our house...before they migrate to the attic I have not had one tomato ripen on the vine this year but think I finally got the last of the squirrels a week or so ago. Funny, they left the peppers alone

My guess is possums. They are earth movers and have very sharp claws. Yours probably belongs to a union and took a break to eat your tomatoes...
We had a possum at the Ranch and I was blown away as to how much digging and burrowing they can do...

I'm betting on a skunk. If you sprinkle cayanne pepper on your tomatoes every week or so the critters will leave them alone and you can wash it off when they ripen

Maybe it's the cougar/leopard everyone seemed to be spotting a while back
It's looking more like a ground hog to me.....I had one do the same thing around here It disappeared after a few scares with the bee B gun...could have headed your way we are only 6 -7 miles apart
We have lived in this house for 40yrs, and we have seen skunks walking thru the yards but never had a problem with them. we have also seen possums wandering around. It is a small horsehoe sub with only 32 houses. If you have Google Earth you can see the sub very well. Just type in 32893 Check Dr. Warren, MI. my house has a small circle drive and my 2001 dark blue Montana is in the drive. It also gives a good view of the Red Run Drain. about 10 yrs ago they built a sub across the drain and disturbed a huge bat colony. We had a bat in the balfry. Sitting in the family room watching a Tiger's game the wife looked up at the ceiling above the fire place and said "What's that" dog starts barking and boom the bat starts flying around the family room. I killed it with Hornet spray. The exterminator said we were lucky that it was only a scanner looking for a place for a colony. Up the line from us he had 2 houses where the colonies had settled in and the people didn't know it right away. What an ordea
