I am on my wife's computer. Mine has an issue. When igniting the power button, the amber power indicator on the screen hinge lights up. The icon next to it indicates the hard drive is active. For a brief moment (3 secs) it lights and then goes out. The fans do not come on. The screen is blank. We purchased and installed and returned the hard drive. We then purchased new RAM to no avail and will be returning it as well. We have changed the power source and have tried starting it with and without the battery installed. f
Mary's computer is a Inspiron 6000 and has the appropriate power source. Mine is a 9300 and has its own power source. Is Mary's enough to power my machine. I am asking because it might be the power transformer that is specific to my computer. I am also questioning the CPU chip and if it is the culprit.

The A/C adapter for the 6000 is probably 65W while your adapter is 90W. May work, but take longer to charge, but I'd be inclined to order a new one just to be on the safe side...you could always return that too.

I don't know without being hands-on, I could take a lot of guesses but that doesn't do you any good.
Have you called Dell? Is it still under warranty? If you can't fire it up I suppose there is no way to tell if its getting any power or charging...right? When you plug your power source in does an indicator light up...possibly blue?
Personally, I hate Dells so I would say that's the first cause of your problem (Sorry John, couldn't help it. I have them at work and they drive me so crazy I take one of my own in to use but they're fairly inexpensive and easy to replace if necessary.)
OK...back to business...I have a Toshiba Satellite that acted very similar. It ended up being the display monitor. It was still under warranty so Toshiba fixed it without cost in a very timely manner. Do you know if you had it set up for more than one monitor? If so, you could attach the 6000 to it and see if your system loads and is workable...that's how I discovered it was my screen on the Toshiba.
Other than that...do you have a knowledgeable friend? Our local Staples offers diagnostics/repair as well as Best Buy

That's what I'm thinking too. I've seen things like you described happen from bad batteries too, but you say you already tried starting without it, so that leaves the external power "brick".
I have a Latitude series which might be different, but as Artsmart said, there are different wattage ratings. My laptop can use the 65W or 90W as standalone, but with the port replicator, it must be the 90W. The 90W is noticeably bigger than the 65W too. If the plug fits in, it'll probably work - they deliberately change those things to ensure you can't use devices from previous generations or model lines.
Because of business I have a dozen computers and over the years I have found it best to buy "trailing edge" technology computers. For the average user a $400 CPU should be fine , you'll get 2-3 years of use , if the restore disk doesn't fix a problem junk the computer. I bought a
Lenovo CPU recently that's about the size of a iPad for less than $200.

Yep...I tend to agree. If its out of warranty you may as well replace the dang thing Hopefully everything has been backed-up...right? I just bought a new iBook because the Toshiba display is acting up again. Have managed to keep it going but when it finally fails I will still have everything I need.

I am taking your advice and ordered a new computer. We had already returned it to have the screen replaced about two years ago. It is a 17. I love to read and my next step is the iBook when the prices come down to a affordable level.
Say, you should see the pendants that I am making out of carving antler. I might try something with an SSR and send it to you.

Actually, I should have said Mac Book Pro, not to be confused with the new iPad. Got one of those for our daughter-in-law for her b'day/MA graduation combined. She's very happy with it. Tim said I might get one for Christmas...he doesn't have much chance of buying me new toys because I get them myself, but I'm trying to keep my wallet closed
If you are interested in reading and don't want an iPad for anything else you might want to look at the $139 Kindle with wifi or the $189 with wifi and 3G. With Kindle the 3G is free, you do not have to sign up with anyone else and no contracts involved. The downside to Kindle is you cannot share the books with anyone else, however, you can put them on your PC/Mac/iPhone/iPod/Android, etc. and you can share the books as long as additioal Kindles accounts are in the same name. Another downside to the Kindle is lack of color display so it wouldn't be good for art books, etc.
I would welcome anything you would like to send me John...thank you in advance

I could not agree more, Artsmart.
My 17" MacBook Pro is pushing 5 years now and, KNOCK ON WOOD, is still performing like a champ. Only a 2.16 GHx Intel Core Duo Processor (kinda slow by today's standards but so am I) and 2 GB RAM, however, it is dependable has hell and has never given me even the slightest problem. It does need a new battery but I just leave it plugged in for now.
I'd love a new one but just cannot see tossing this one while still working so well.

Kindle sounds good. I am reading Harry Truman. What a boring start to an exciting life. I am at the point he is being told the army corp is making an A bomb. You should see my California Bear on Antler. Makes nice pendant. I think that might be my choice for you for all the advice you have given me over the past two years.
