Internet "The National Enquirer"
I was mollified to see something I had written on the SSRFanatic Forum front and centre on the internet as I looked up a related issue. Our Fanatic thread was there in its entirety for all to see. A good reason for screen names methinks.
When I post something it is directed to the SSRFanatics. I realize anyone can enter the forum and read the thread but it is not my intention to broadcast my opinions to the world. However, if the world wishes to make the effort to enter our forum and read about our thoughts and opinions they are welcome. My stuff is intended for a slightly more private audience, to people I feel are friends with a common bond passing experiences and information amongst ourselves with the common good as a goal.
POINT IS: Why do our threads hit the internet without us wanting them there? Why don't people have to enter the Forum to look for them? I may have an opinion about something and put it out for discussion amongst us but I don't intend it to be cast so far as to potentially cause someone financial harm.
I am not going to refer specifically by name or product as this is so open to public view. In fact when I refer to the "National Enquirer" I do it in a loving and respectful manner.
I looked a product up on the internet that was endorsed by one of our well respected and knowlegeable Fanatic information sources and was surprised to see front and centre "So and so company Ripoff artists". Human nature entered and immediately gone was my trust and the innocent until proven guilty attitude. This company now had to earn my trust likely due to some unjustly unsatisfied jerk. Then there were several headings regarding how to spot ripoffs and cons. As I read further down there was another negative heading from an SSRFanatic post. This was a pretty innocent post and I am sure it was not meant to be a company bashing comment on the internet but the heading made it look like another complaint and unless a reader went through the thread they would not see that. Anyone can say anything and be posted on the internet causing someone's business irreparable harm.
WHAT IS MY WISH? I wish people who are interested in our views and opinions could come in and read them, assess them for what they are but I wish these same views and opinions were not broadcast so as to impose them on the world at large.
Unfortunately people tend to believe what they read, generally thinking what is written comes from a somewhat knowlegeable and intelligent source which, more often than not, is not the case.
The long fight for Freedom of Speech has rather surpassed its goal in my opinion. It is now more the day of "Confidentiality and Privacy Agreements" to protect people from "Overfreedom of Speech". One can pretty much say as they please with complete immunity. I can't imagine anyone winning a slander suit in this day.
IMO this more or less started when the nations courts deemed it okay to burn the nations flags as an expression of discontent and it has absolutely escalated out of control from that point on. Things our nations have been built upon are being called into question. (I am digressing).

Cash,
Thanks for the heads up. I knew the forum was open but I had fogotten about the "all powerful" SEARCH ENGINE which is faster than the speeding word and able to leap many pages in a single search. I wonder if IT can see into the SMOT. (A question for the moderators?)

If you do what you've always done,
You'll get what you've always gotten.
you have to wake up and smell that coffee and realize(perhaps sadly)
that the internet is WIDE OPEN to all and for all to do with what they want.
I agree that its sad that your opinion meant for SSR fanatic readers ends up elsewhere but thats life on the WWW.
I cant agree with you that Freedom of speech has been misused and needs to be reined in-im sorry youre upset with your ssr msgs showing up elsewhere but it has taught you and others a good lesson--"dont write anything you wouldnt want everyone to see and understand ANYWHERE".

My understanding is that the SMOT area can only be seen by members...I'll double check that...

Search engines are a great tool to locate information. I guess the downside comes with the territory.
Just for the heck of it, I just did a search for Signature SSR, and presto bingo, the thread about Signature 12 is front and center, including Crazy53's line about getting Iris a big A$$ diamond in the search engine info.

I really was not referring to being upset about "my SSr message" as I could give a rats a$$ about that but it was the fact the whole thread was there. It was the company I looked up that bothered me. (remember this guys product received high praise from a respected and knowledgeable SSRFAnatic)I simply Googled a guys name and his company came up first item immediately followed by a disgruntled client and the entire first page looked like a "problem area" to avoid. Without our fellow Fanatics praise I would avoid this product just to be on the safe side. I'm sure the company relies largely on internet sales and I am sure those sales will be affected by one persons opinion, justified or not. Once read it is hard to get it out of your mind and how does a company really rebut and overcome that sort of adversity. One negative outweighs ten positives.
We see things written here regularly. Case in point the guy developing new spoilers for SSR's where a severed partnership had been agreed to. All kinds of things were said in that thread that likely hit the open internet.
What I am saying is "unless you are prepared to generate harm" to someone or something don't make negative posts about it here and expect it to remain "between us" and people who look in on us.
My understanding is that the SMOT area can only be seen by members...I'll double check that...
The SMOT area should be only accessible via the username / password of a registered, paid account. A search engine can't bypass the security check of a log-in system.
A search engine can see the rest of the forum because you are not required to provide an account to view it.
Cash; Before you hit the submit button, Copyright your post. state that this cannot be duplicated without written consent.
Now I'm getting Breezy or is that just BS. Just kidding folks, we all should know that anything we say can be accessed by many individuals. EVEN your PM's can be seen by what I call Peeping Toms. Nothing, Nothing, Nothing is private on the Internet.
AND anything in the public record, i.e.- a City/county/state magazine or newsletter. I Google-ed my name and found several newspaper articles with photos that were about my building an Ozone Generator at a local industrial plant, Another Google 'post' showed a photo of me that had been in a State of Florida award announcement sent to news media, over 5 years old... (its all in the cyberspace.).. AND maybe your proud lawyer husband who got a 'Trophy" for one-ups-manship points at his Law firm... Wedding Photos can be public record shot by a newspaper man.
