That guy is about as good as it gets with 3D flying!
Our local club folded up and there are apartment buildings on the land where our flying field used to be. I've been nervous about flying without frequency control because someone else flying a mile or so from me could very well shoot me down if they were on the same channel.
Well, now there is a technology called Spread Spectrum where the transmitter and the receiver (oftentimes multiple receivers in one aircraft these days) are bound together. It operates on 2.4GHz. There is pretty much ZERO interference between radios nowadays.
So, I decided to get back into RC flying and have already purchased the radio. I bought the JR 11X. Just the radio and receiver, no servos and no flight battery pack was about $750.00!
The giant scale heavy duty servos with the metal gears are $100-150 each and you generally need 5 to 7 of them. The gasoline engine in a plane the size of Joe Smith's is probably at least 100cc. A Desert Aircraft 100cc twin is about $1000.00!
You could easily put $4000 to $5000 into something like that.
But, it's a lot of fun. I've been a modeler since I was a kid 50 years ago. I've flown RC since the 70's. It's a lot like riding a bicycle. Once you've done a lot of it you can get right back into it again like you've never quit.
I don't know that I'll get into 3D but I sure do like to do the regular aerobatics. Stuff like Split S, Immelmann Turns, Hammer Head Stall Turns, Cuban 8's, Lomcevaks, Snap Rolls, and Avalanches... I can do those.
I once won 7 out of 10 aerobatic contests I entered in 3 states one summer.
So... I just about HAVE to get back into it again.
