We went to Atlantic City for the Classic Car auction held there anually. On Saturday we went to Cape May NJ for the day to shop and eat. On the way South to exit 0 we spotted this truck sitting for sale in a gas station. My wife suggested we stop on the way back north and look at it. Gotta love a car girl! Any way, we stopped and checked it out. After speaking to the owner on the phone and a short test drive we negotiated over the phone and with a $100.00 cash deposit and promise of a check in the mail I drove this home 125 miles 2 days later. Really, the check is in the mail.
It is a 1979 GMC Sierra 15 step side pickup. 2 wheel drive, auto trans, 4.1 liter straight 6 with factory AC and 89k miles. Now I have to decide if I want to "Do it" or keep it stock as a daily driver. I could at least put better wheels on, possibly 18's?
Any suggestions?
Dave

Not too many leave the straight 6 in those trucks. It looks like you have a few V8 toys. I think I'd leave it a 6 banger.
That Truck Looks To Good To Mess With. My Self Id Leave It Alone And Injoy It The Way It Is Maybe A Split Manifold And Glass Packs On It. But That Would Be It Remember Ther Only Original Once. Shes Went This Far So Far...........
And, yes, I would certainly do something about the wheels. Geez, it has been so long... a classmate of mine in high school (we're class of '81) had the fleetside version of this truck. These wheels just don't look right to me. And hasn't the back been lifted to allow for carrying heavier loads?
Drop it.. And some wheels.. Other than that I would save your money as these things always rusted and the hoods bent half way up from opening and closing them with the week suppert brace they have under them...
I think the height is stock. No air shocks here. I am looking into 18 vs 20 inch wheels all around, something like this one. It's tough finding 5 lug wheels now, everything is 6.
The amazing thing is there is no rust or rot on this truck. It must have been stored indoors for some time. I know it was at one point in upstate New York.

Here's a little update on my latest project, the 79 GMC. I dropped the front with 2 1/2 inch spindles and kept the stock height springs and shocks(replacing with new of course). I lowered the back 4 inches with hangers, shackles, and drop shocks. I added 20 inch wheels with 275-45-20 tires all around. I changed the grill and bezels, lost the bumper guards, wheel molding, and bed trim as well. Not too bad for a 6 cylinder. I've done more to this in a few months than my SSR in 2 1/2 years. I get almost as many looks in this truck as the SSR!
