My Canucks are in trouble plenty. Since Mats Sundin signed with the Canucks we are 4 and 10 and 1 and 4 since he hit the ice. We are in complete disarray on the ice.
I was so sick of hearing about Sundin for months where he seemed to monopolize all sports shows. I really wished he would just go away, back to Sweden and play out there.
I must admit when he signed with the Canucks I thought it might be a good thing and could make the difference on a genuine playoff run. The Canucks were leading the Northwest division handily prior to this and I can't help wonder if this signing has disrupted the morale of the players who were doing quite well without him.
Luongo did not look sharp in his return after being out a month (groin) but maybe he will get it back on track.

I see the Calgary Flames are now leading the Northwest Divison

I've had my eye on the Northeast the Boston Bruins are playing well

Must admit I am somewhat surprised by the Bruins currently leading everything with 70 points. That Tim Thomas just makes me shake my head sometimes. Even though they are playing well I think the Blackhawks are still in a learning year. It would be for hockey if there could be a real wire to wire between two great "Original Six" teams (Red Wings/Blackhawks I mean).

Flames are a very solid team and I don't expect them to falter. Canucks are going to have to do an immediate reversal and play .750 hockey to catch them I expect.

The Lightning won the other night.

The other team did not show up and it only took the Lightning 3 periods to score.

Wait until next year!

There is the train of thought that if Cavaliere were traded that a "super"star like him could be replaced by a few very good players to build around Stamkos and hopefully not ruin him. St. Louis will always do okay. Maybe we could give you Sundin for Cavaliere?

Something happening next year I haven't heard about??

Saw last night where the NHL purchased some arena equipment that can be moved around to build outdoor rinks for the "showcase spectacular" outdoor games. One site proposed was the Rose Bowl.

Can't imagine how they would keep hockey players hydrated though.

Redwings are starting to put it together now. Solid goaltending, better penalty killing, and more balanced scoring. Found it interesting last night, they showed the all time wins leaders in the NHL. Detroit and Toronto are exactly tied for third place with something like 2552 wins each. What really surprised me though, was Boston in 2nd place with over 2700 wins. Of course, Montreal is first with just over 3000 wins.

Great player in a great Oiler era.
I hope Glenn keeps his composure better than he did at the Hall of Fame induction though. I have a hard time with slobbering sobbing athletes. Wendel Clark and Trevor Linden are recent role models for classy exits.

Couple things kind of surprise me too. I guess because the Bruins have always been steady competitors with no real dismal times that I can remember plus when they got Esposito from Chicago the Bruins really racked up a lot of points in the Espo, Orr, Bucyk Cashman etal era. They were great. The other surprise to me is the Leafs still being tied with Detroit after about 25 years of Leaf mediocrity at best versus a lot of Wings dominance.

That humiliation was actually the intro to the current Canuck fizzle with only 2 wins since. In defense of the Canucks on that one you have to wonder about the guys that draw up the schedule. Played Anaheim (100 miles from San Jose?) in Vancouver, straight from the dressing room to the airport and arrive San Jose 4 A.M. and expected to play hockey at 7 p.m. against arguably the best team in hockey with an afternoon nap.
Looking forward to the Sharks/Wings tonight. Should be a great one but in San Jose give the Sharks the nod!

I feel tonight will be a good game (Sharks - Wings). The first two the schedule and travel was too much of a factor and the home team won easily. If they start Ozzie I think the Sharks win, but I favor the Wings if they start Conklin in goal. Unfortunately Conklin played last so it's Ozzie's turn. Conklin has 5 shutouts already playing less than half the games. He's been so steady!

On paper they look pretty identical. Both played 22 games , similar win/loss with Conklin having a slightly better GAA and save percentage. Conklin does have the shutout stats at 5-0 though for sure but easier for Conklin to get 20 shot shutouts against the Kings, Blue Jackets and Oilers than when Ozzie gets bombarded for 50 shots by Dallas. However, Conklin's shutouts against Chicago and San Jose were "Big Time" even if the Sharks were tired there was still 36 shots on goal. I think a goalie choice for tonight is pretty much coach's gut feeling on who is on their "A" game at the time.

Must admit I didn't see much, mostly by choice or better yet, lack of interest. Caught it when it was 10-10. If I want to watch the best I want to see them at their best.
Like most fans I like Ovechkin but I did not like his goofy display in the individual skills or whatever it is called.

Thankfully January 27 has arrived!! At least it's better than football where we go through a 2 week withdrawal. That's a bit bizarre.

I didn't watch either, it's just become ridiculous. That shootout show, which I did see, is just a waste of time. 105 plus on the fastest shot did get my attention though. No wonder guys are getting hurt blocking shots nowadays. Used to be just a stinger for a while, now it's a broken bone. I remember my first pair of Lange boots and smiling the first time a shot hit them. Wow, no pain!

Cash ... Mats Sundin did not hurt my feelings leaving. Made me mad he had the "no trade" last year, when we could have got something in return for him.
I think he has been pacing himself to last the full season for a few years now.

I have to wait another 3-4 years to get the leafs rewired. Around here it's 50/50 split between leafs /wings. I'm on the ha ha side.

Best Christmas gift ever was when I was about 10, I received a coat with six team logos. Leaf was over heart, wing on other side, Chicago and Boston on sleeves
NY and Montreal on back.

Wow, it takes a real man to admit to wearing Lange skates! Had a guy on our team wore them that took a lot of ribbing. Looked like he was skating in ski boots! Gotta admit they were impenetrable though!
I wonder if Chara was using a composite or wooden stick. I imagine Iafrate would have been using a wood stick when he had the 103 or whatever. I made a comment on the other NHL related thread about the composite sticks. They may gain speed on the shot but how many lost opportunities when you wind up with a half stick in each hand but my main bitch about them is all the slashing penalties being called as these things implode on the easiest contact.

Sundin looks similar to an investment that I made in the stock market last spring. Too bloody late to do anything about it except cover my eyes and hope like heck!

That hockey jacket sounds pretty cool. I don't imagine you still have it.

Bruins/Caps tonite was excellent. They are both very exciting teams to watch. Bigtime O/T saves by both goalies. Tomorrow I get to see which of the Jekyll/Hyde Canuck team is going to emerge after the All Star break.

Right you are, the Langes were a joke. The only way I could skate in them at all was with the laces untied. I was playing for a small college team and we all were given a pair to try by the rep. I made half a season and gave up on them. Seems like I had to put a ton of rock in the blades too, to get the things to turn corners. Right with you concerning composite sticks - way way to fragile for NHL. Brad Steward of the Wings goes through 5 or 6 a game, and as a defenseman it's cost us some goals.

Wings lost in OT to Columbus last night. Started out with just 17 skaters, Lidstrom and Datsuk suspended, Steward hurt, then Zetterburg goes out in the middle of the first period. I guess we were lucky to get 1 point with the strange lines we were playing.

Columbus is really playing well though for most of January. They are 5-2-1 in there last 8 with the last 6 being one goal games. Suspending Lidstrom was somewhat silly but I guess the league had to make a point or consider a completely different All Star venue. I do think that "being named to the '08-'09 All Star team" should be stricken from his (all no shows) resume though. If they don't want the honor of the title by playing for the fans, they shouldn't have the glory.

Jeez, just turned the Bruins/Canadians game and Les Habitant are wearing some throwback uniforms. The rouge blanc et bleu look like old prison garb! Not sure what era they are from but look like 19th century!

Alas, there is no joy in Canuckville as the mighty Mats continues to strike out! Sadly, he is not the only one. Lots of teams struggling though. Wings, Montreal for instance. A lot of the conference races are really closing up.
