Pit-Bull VS Porcupine

I had gotten this in an email today... Poor Pooch.. I hope he doesn't mess with a Porcupine again...

In case you ever want to tangle with a porcupine...
A Pit-bull decided he would battle a Porcupine in back of his house in Southern California.
But being both brave and stupid, he ultimately learned the hard way that he can't always win, no matter how tough he is...

A vet sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills.
The dog survived, and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.......

That's going to be one pissed off dog when they start pulling the quills out.

ouch...

When I was a kid my brother brought home a porcupine he found down by the river...her name was Marsha. She lived in our backward for a year or so but mom finally got tired of her escaping and having to come to school to get my brother or I to take her home. If you ever need to pick one up start with the nose and run your hand all the way back and grab it by the tail....really, it works!

Unfortunately I can guarentee you this dog did not "learn" anything from that encounter. I can also assure you that the porcy is dead. I`ve owned pitts for years and determination is what defines their character. It`s a quality that is often termed "game" in that, no matter the odds or injury, the dog will complete the task at hand. This breed is among the most intelligent of dogs, but this is a lesson that can never be learned. Without a doubt, if that dog had all those quills removed, the next day it would attack another porcupine. Some may call that stupid, but that is the quality that endeared the breed as couriers in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Remarkable dogs, but determined to a fault.......Paul

I think that would apply to just about any dog. We had a blood hound mix that got sprayed by skunks several nights in a row...he did kill them all finally but we sure went thru a lot of tomato juice

I'm wondering can he still see. He had to get several quills in his eyes I'm sure.

Even if he closed his eye lids a quill would more than likely go through them. It looks like several went through his ears also.

Another thing to remember is that quills have backwards facing barbs that catch on the skin making them difficult to extract.

I have a porcupine quill. The pictures don't do the size of a quill justice. They are not small. I look at the photos and think OUCH!!!
