Planning a south eastern trip
Our Boy Scout troop is in the beginning stage of planning thier next summers 10 day trip. They intend to travel down into the Carolina's, over to the ocean, up into the Virginia's and then back towards home again.
Any suggestions as to good points of interest stops , and tent camping would be very helpful. They are interested in possible whitewater rafting, cave exploration, climbing/repelling, and anything else that may come of interest.
Talk of stopping at the Hershey factory on the way back has bee n brought up already.
Hershey will be a good stop. There is a campground there but I don’t know about tent camping. I think Mary Ellen of michaelf9123 = Michael & Mary Ellen may still work there in the summer months. If there is a way she can help, I’m sure she will.
Another good stop would be the Natural Bridge in VA.

Very , FUZZY
As a kid growing up in Virginia, I always remember the Blue Ridge Parkway, Luray, the Luray Caverns and the Shenandoah National Park plus the many Civil War Battlefields.
Fuzzy....Knowing the adventure spirit of the scouts, you have to consider white water rafting on the New River in West Virginia. I went a lot in my younger days on the New River and the the more dangerous Gauley River and had many great times. I took my son when he was 14 down the New River and was one of our more great adventures. He still talks about it now and he's 19. We even have a DVD of the adventure that they took of us going thru the many rapids.
You can camp in their nice campground and have activities for the kids.

The whitewater rafting has got to be a for sure. They loved it when we did the Snake river out in Jacksonhole , WYOMING.
Hope you can work it out. The campground is cool too with a huge swing and a climbing wall plus other stuff. Also get to float under the New River Bridge and it is a cool sight to go under the third largest arch bridge in the world. 900 feet up to the top! I found some pics of the campground and where we set up camp and the crazies that jump off the New Bridge on Bridge Day.. Good luck.

Bumpin this thread back up.
We're in some of our final planning stages for the trip and will begin calling in reservations for campgrounds and attractions after the holidays.
So far it sounds as if the sliding rock and possible zip line tours are a go along with the whitewater rafting.
We'll be stopping by Gina's for either a lunch or dinner stop depending on the time frame of what we're doing that day.
One of the days will be up by Virgina Beach, so Ed was kind enough to respond with a couple campgrounds there, and a possible visit. Mabe treat the boys to a digerie doo show or surfing demo. Will talk more later.
Any other ideas? We're still open to suggestions.
Contemplating the Huntsville Space center tour. I'm up for it. if it fits in the travel plan.

Hi Fuzzy. Not sure of your routes but this cavern was great for a quick stop one year when we were headed back from the beach. Very nice structures, not crowded, cheap, and really a cool place with stories of old on it. We were fortunate enough to stop there when a group of Amish folks were visiting. When we walked in, I hear singing from a distance but was simply beautiful to hear. When I asked about it, the owner said the Amish group was singing down in the caverns.
We paid and walked to the incline to go into the cavens and the more we walked down, the more heavenly the singing seemed as it echoed and goosebumps were on top of goosebumps as we walked!! My kids , my wife and I looked at each in the dark shadows and saw we were all had tears in our eyes fore we knew we were in a "magic" moment in life that happens in rarity. Just incredible to hear that beautiful singing.

Fuzzy, I don't have any idea what route you and the guys will be taking, but here is a state park that is close to me and has the tallest falls east of the Mississippi. Here's a link to the website. This is a large park, with plenty of camping areas.
Virginia air and space museum in Hampton is nice, it also has an imax theatre and many interactive exhibits. You could camp at first landing state park in va beach. It is on the Chesapeake bay, swimming and 20 miles of hiking trails.
