radar detectors
there doesn't seem to be any current threads about which radar detectors fanatics are using. We're looking to buy a new one (I know, it would have saved me in WY ). I found a Beltronics that we'll go see tomorrow. Any other recommendations?

Beltronics/Escort...

About BELTRONICS and ESCORT, Inc.
ESCORT Inc., the parent corporation to BELTRONICS, is the leading manufacturer of high-performance radar and laser detectors. ESCORT manufactures products under the ESCORT, PASSPORT, SOLO, Vectorand BELTRONICS brands. The company is headquartered in West Chester, Ohio with its principal manufacturing facility located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
The Passport 9500ix and the Beltronics GX65 are sister products. Unfortunately detectors are illegal in Ontario, ironically where Beltronics is located... For some reason the GX65 seems to get the nod from testers over the 9500ix.
I loaned my Bel detector to my father-in-law about 15+ years ago... He got busted for hitting the brakes (instant on) in Quebec. Haven't had one since
California
Radar Detectors in California: Radar detectors are legal to use in California, however it is illegal to use to hang anything from the windshield with suction cups. Drivers in California might be interested in our Radar Detector Visor Holder.
Laser Jammers in California: Laser jammers are illegal to use in California.
Radar detectors are legal in every state except Virginia and Washington DC.
Radar jammers are illegal in every state.
Laser jammers are illegal in CO, IL, MN, OK, UT, VA, and Wash DC.
MN has that thing about hanging anything from the windshield like CA.
Remember we're talking about your SSR, not commercial trucks.
In the Great White North, both radar detectors and laser jammers are legal in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan, ONLY.

I have been a Valentine user for years, Great performance and durability. I used a small patch cord to go from the power and ground in the mirror connector to the detector, very clean install and hard to see from the outside.

I have a Valentine and it's saved me several times even though I have not had it upgraded. In my Vette I have a mount that attaches to the mirror and it's hardwired into the elctric system.

Another one for the Valentine V-1, don't leave home without one!
I can easily swap mine between the R, (which I need), and the bike, (where I REALLY need it!) The laser has to be stationary to work, so you only see them in the outskirts of the cities, so when rolling into town just cool it and run with other traffic.
Detectors will save you about 85% of the time, but alerting you once or twice will pay for the device, which ever one you get.
Another trick which I recomend is having the mount so you can slip the device out quickly. Kinda hard to charm your way outta some "performance award" when the thing is in plain sight of the friendly officer that's standing right by the door!

Another Valentine 1 user. Saved me more times than I can remember. Love the patented 360 degree surveilence it provides. Whats more to say??

My sister got collected by a LASER in Pasadena and he stated he picked her at 700 yards (How many blocks is that?) and then waited for her to get to him.
I use a Whistler Pro3450. The detector element is behind the grill and I mounted the console unit in a collapsed cupholder on the drivers side of the console. It is idden by your leg from the driver's side and looks basically like the cupholder from the passenger side. Can be slipped off and dropped on the floor if you want it to disappear completely. Has a front and rear LASER detector, for what it is worth. Lasers got you if they hit you unless they are jammed.

FYI
Lasers read only a 30" circle at 1/4 mile away, and not all of your vehicle needs to be in the circle for accurate reading. Headlights are a favorite target area. Favored by motorcycle cops in the shadows. I've seen lasers used inside of cities all the time, but slowing down inside a city is solid advice.

Sandy I use a Whistler Pro 78 in my SSR and my Solstice. It has saved me thousands of dollars! Best detector available for under $200.00. Been using it for almost 3 years now with no tickets. (knock on wood)

Radar detectors are legal in California. My V1 is permanently hanging off my rear view mirror, and I don't think the cops care a bit. Last one asked me, "Why didn't you slow down?", and when I shared that the detector did not go off, he explained how he used his Laser Guns on me, which I shared here.
It was a nice conversation, and I went to traffic school... again.
Never needed a radar detector. I have yet to get an actual speeding ticket. But then... I do behave myself.

Actually, I'd say that every state has a law against anything that creates an impairment of your vision through the windshield - that goes for all the trinkets people like to hang from the mirrors too... Big nono! Think of the lawsuit if a pedestrian is hit because the driver couldn't see them step off the curb because of some box on the window or a CD hanging from the mirror.
I've seen drivers with thier GPS mounted like it was a freaking HUD!!!

Not to hijack the thread, but if you've ever gone into a tight, uphill right-hand turn, that THING in the middle of the windshield COMPLETELY obscures your view I keep mine flexed up as high as possible to give me maximum vis, but... I'm just under 5'10". What do TALL people do?!?

Same with me and I've been driving since 1971 or 72.
Only ticket ever issue to me was for parking in a handicap zone due to expired handicap permit. (first group of permits issued back in the early 80's didn't have any expired dates printed on them.)
I use Mike in AZ most of the time for my radar detector.
I just let him take the lead, no worries
That reminds me ... On that cruise with Mikey between Flagstaff & Colorado Springs, I recall once or twice hearing Mikey over the two way radio informing us that his radar detector was picking up single so we slow down a little.
