On the road to Kerrville, TX
If this is in the wrong place would a moderator please relocate it!
Well I hit the road after work on Friday, April 24, 2009. First stop, a visit with Mike In AZ to get the first production spare tire kit installed on my
It was a beautiful drive from SanDimas to Ontario where I picked up my sister at the airport since she needed a ride to Phoenix. First chore was to jump start her PRIUS so she could roll up the windows in the parking lot. (Hope she does not have trouble when she gets back to it on Sunday).
Dropped my sister where she was saying and arrived a Mike's about 8:30 pm and settled in. As we were planning the next morning's events, Mike noticed the inside of my right front tire was worn badly and needed to be replaced, and we found a nail in the right rear. It was decided that I needed four tires and an alignment before continuing my journey.
I am not sure how, but Mike set me up to take the Freeway Chevrolet on Saturday morning to get the tires changed and the alignment.
The next morning Doug Allen arrived with four tires on rims and they were dropped at the dealership. The dealer put those tires on my rims and my tires on Doug's rims so they could be available if someone got in a bind. We also took my "new" 17" Envoy rim to see if the dealer had a take off he could mount on that for my spare. No such luck so off to Discount Tire where we found a VERY GOOD tire for $30 plus mount and balance.
Mike "let" me mount the battery box and tire winch on my truck while he took pictures of each step so he can do the instructions to go with the kit. It is very straight forward. With the proper tools this should be a one day job, especially with a helper to hand you tools (and maybe read the directions to you) as you work. Saturday night there is a free car show in Scotsdale and since both Mike and Deb had plans with their kids, I went to the show. Pictures follow.
On Sunday morning Mike and I tackled the mounting of the spare on the winch. This required a bit of fine tuning and we discovered that, in my case at least, the spare tire and the traile hitch are mutually exclusive. If the tire were 1/2" to 1" smaller in diameter this might not be an issue, but as Deb pointed out, "if you are hauling a trailer you can carry the spare in it."
Tomorrow morning I am off for Albuquerque, NM then Oklahoma City, OK on Tuesday and Memphis, TN on Wednedsay arriving at Maggie Valley on Thursday evening for the
Below are some pictures from the Scottsdale Pavillions car show. Notice the 2004 TuTone SSR owned by Dan from Scottsdale. He is very likely to be joining us soon. He had not heard of this site and was very interested. He is the third owner but all the mods were done by the first. I will leave them for him to describe.

I am going to try to take pictures and post every day I am on the road. There will be days when I am in one place for a few days where I might not get on each day, but I plan to have quite a tale here when I get home in July.

Phoenix to Albuquerque
Well, Mike In AZ suggested taking a path less travelled than the Interstate and we mapped out a path on US 60 to I-25 and then north. It was really a lot of fun. I basically had the road to my self and got to see some beautiful scenery. In the middle of the trip there is a big plain surrounded b mountains wher the Astronomy types have constructed a Very Large Array of 25 meter parabolic dishes which they use as radio telescope. I spent 45 minutes there at the visitors center and have a bunch of pictures to share. I did not know when I started taking pictures that the visitors center even existed. I wonder what I will find on the way to Oklahoma City tomorrow.
1. Snow by the road outsid Springerville, AZ
2. Downtown Springerville, AZ
3. The road out of Mc Nary, AZ
4. The road less traveled (US 60)
5. The VLA from a distance

I'm glad you got to see some of the roads less traveled in AZ. It's pretty nice to bypass the interstate once in a while and "be one with the road"......

Did you have lunch in Pie Town, NM????
Safe Journey,
Mike & Debbie
Pie town was "Closed" for winter hours. They open late and close early on Tuesday thru Saturday.Sunday and Monday are their weekend. Nothing open when I went through. Oh well. I will have to come back again I guess.
Now for the trip from Albuquerque to Oklahoma City.
I-40 all the way. The picture ays most of it, but the temp did not show on the DIC in the picture. It was 32F when I started out and 50F when I took the picture. It got to 57F by the time I got to OKC. Other than that and the the fact that I had to wash the when I arrived because the boys working for the Texas DOT or whatever it is called were cutting concrete and let the runoff flood the traffic lanes to get thrown on everything that went that way, the picture says it all. Tomorrow it is off to Memphis.

From OKC to Memphis area
well it is a seven houor drive according to MapQuest. I left at 0600, stopped for breakfast at 0830 and arrived athe the hotel just after 1300. Not too bad for a day that started out raining and 74F with the top up and after breakfast was a muggy 74F-80F and topless. Today the truckers seemed to show some interest in that nice Chevy truck with a convertible top. Some knew what it was and others did not but all were impressed and I got in some good chatting while watching for "bears." Just before the AR/TN state line I came over a rise with a bunch of trucks in the right lane and me in the left and there in the middle of the median were two state cops chatting. I lifted my foot and went by at about 75 in a 70 zone and the truckers let me slip in to see if anyone followed us. The West bound truckers said the bears were still sitting and jawing when I was two miles down the road so I escaped again.
Somewhere in AR I saw a construction [roject that looked like a church on the other side of the Interstate. I was not sure there was even an access road for it and thought that a bit strange. After breakfast I saw another that was complete and had to snap a picture. Most of the time in AR and TN the scenery was nice. The OK scenery was a bit blah.
As I was looking for my off ramp in the Memphis area I saw a with the graffics I call "checkmark" that run down the body just below the hood line and expand behind the door handles the follow the fender line back up.
I know I have seen it in pictures and just can't seem to find any. Of course my camera was not ready for this one.
1. AR scenery
2. Freeway church

I made it to Maggie Valley
It was an uneventful drive from Memphis to Maggie Valley. About 7 hours with a lunch stop. I saw a few SSRs at Gina's place as I went by so I honked and waved. I found my time share and got checked in, unpacked, and cleaned a bit of road grime off the
I showered and headed out to find the crowd. I was impossible to miss them. The parking lot was full of SSRs and people. First I had to find Gina since I was on a mission from Mike In AZ. Took care of that and started meeting people. Strange thing about these SSR drivers and their spouses, they are all very friendly and welcoming but they do not seem to understand that Maggie Valley, NC is on the way from Pasadena, CA to Kerrville, TX. If I explained it once I must have explained it a dozen times.
I took some pictures of some special trucks but do not want to spoil any surprises so will wait until after the Show to post individual pictures.
We had Margueritas by Furykay and Pizza by Dominoes. It was about 9:15 when I headed back to get some well needed rest. So here I am an hour later writing this.
1. One of tthe welcome signs
2. The parking lot, before it filled up.
3. Me with Gina
