God's Country
Linda and Pete,
Kiss the ground when you get into God's Country today. I hope you enjoy the warm AZ sun, and the hospitality of the AZ Fanatics! Can't wait to see pictures. AZ had quite a bit of rain this past winter; hopefully, the desert is bursting with color.
Take care, (and thank you to the Fanatic who gave me my new signature - I finally was able to figure out how to upload and activate it!)

And that's no kidding girl. Make sure your car is full and your belly is full especially when riding across Texas and New Mexico (so far). The towns are far from each other and many are almost ghost towns. There are so many towns where most of the buildings are abandoned, falling apart, destroyed etc. Then there are the "towns" that are 1 or 2 blocks long.
I must say, this is an interesting trip and most of the scenery is awesome. A good part of the Mother Road is along side I-40. You can see it from the Interstate. I can just see a caravan of SSRs (with food in the trunk) riding down Route 66. What a sight.
Oh, and so many people have questioned and admired the SSR.
I am so jealous that you are doing this and not me Not really but I have always wanted to do this to see the cool stuff before it is all gone !!!
I love the pictures and I am laughing (with you ) not at you Pete on your driving skills, I think you deserve the getting lost award Maybe P/P can transfer that over to you

05/10/08 – Route 66 New Mexico
We got up this morning, had breakfast (I didn’t sleep in) and took off to see Earl (DaRetOne) at the Route 66 Casino. Guess what? We got lost again. But we did find the place before Earl’s meeting. Earl, like all of our SSR kin, is a really nice guy. Pete wants to be just like him when he grows up. Earl has an extra clean Redline.
When Earl left for his meeting, Pete and I went into the Casino to look around – right! I pulled him out of there before there was no more money to finish our trip. I don’t know if he was too happy about that. However, as we rode through the towns and saw the mountains, he did forgive me.
I drove through many of the towns (even in the mountains). We crossed the Continental Divide and went on to Gallup. We had lunch at the El Rancho Hotel which was really neat. The décor is unique, the rooms are named for Hollywood stars and there are pictures of the stars on all the walls. There was a large Harley group there from Brazil that was riding Route 66 from Chicago to LA. Most of them could not even speak English. They took up a whole dining room.
We then went to the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert. Oh . . My . . God! What a sight. The pictures cannot even come near to what it looks like. The land out here is so expansive; it makes you feel so small. The rock formations and colors are phenomenal. There is 28 miles of this beauty in the park.
From there we went to Winslow Arizona so Pete could stand on the corner just like the song. We, of course, went in circles to find the corner, but we did and now he is happy. We continued to Flagstaff, where we are now. We checked into the hotel, put our stuff up and went for dinner. Yep, again. We got lost getting out of the parking lot. It took 20 minutes to find the restaurant on the corner. The food was good there so it was worth it. I think we are going to the Grand Canyon tomorrow, if we can find it. . . .
