Running Of the Bulls, Anyone?
Well, it's that time of year, the annual Festival Of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain and the Running of the Bulls, that Ernest Hemingway wrote about in The Sun Also Rises. When I was a sergeant in the Army in Germany I travelled 2000 miles one way by train to run. The second time I ran, the last day, I was gored and made international headlines, not to mention a week in the hospital. The reason I was gored was that I had no evidence to support my claim of the 1st run (everyone that was supposed to go with me backed out), so I determined to get close enough that one of the professional photographers would get me. I succeeded. The largest shop in Pamplona that sold photos of each days run had 12 photos of the last day. 9 were me. I also made the front page (and back page) of the Pamplona newspaper, the Diario De Navarre. Since that time, what happened to me has not happened to anyone else that lived to tell about it. The bull that got me, got me 3 feet from where Matthew Tassio was killed in 1995. This is one of the photos and his horn has slipped under my belt since he was just an inch too high trying to plant his horn in my side (I can still hear him panting in my ear). I am now caught on the left horn of an 1100 pound fighting bull. And they saved the biggest, meanest and baddest (is that a word?) bulls for the last day. This was just the beginning of a bad deal for me.
Anyone else got a story?

After giving this story a lot of thought I decided to share a portion in my life when I lived on the edge. We all do things that might not be considered wise, but we do them anyway. Whether it was for the thrill, because our friends were doing it, to impress some woman, or simply on a dare, I did something similiar to running with the bulls.
I can admit to you now that it was a foolish move on my part, and I would be remiss if I did not tell you there were injuries during this escapade, but I did it it. Am I a better person for doing so,.. who can tell. But I can tell you this, the ones that go back year after year, are the ones we should be thinking of.
