Smokey Yunick's old garage burned

Racing fans, yesterday Smokey Yunick's "Best damn Garage" burned to the ground. It has been closed since Smokey's passing in 2001. No one was hurt, but the building was a total loss. As many of you know Smokey was responsible for many racing inovations. The building was a reminder to some of the better days of NASCAR. Sorry to see history disappear...docrod

Wow... Was this intended/planned by his estate? If so, that's terrible, I'm kind of disappointed...

If not, and someone did it for kicks, I am absolutely disgusted.

That makes me furious!! I admire him and Bill Jenkins so much. Between them they took high performance engine building to a whole different level.

Geez, that is sad. Between his exploits in NASCAR and his popular articles and columns in Popular Science Magazine in the 60's and 70's I got to feel like I knew him. Certainly a bit of automotive history lost.

As a young kid back in the 60's, I too remember reading those magazine articles.

Smokey Yunick name came up the other night on one of those SPEED Channel weekend program & the question addressed was why Smokey Yunick isn’t on the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The answer from one of the announcers was Smokey name doesn’t sell tickets. I thought that was .

Hopefully someday Smokey will be elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Truth be known Smokey did not get along with the Frances. Really Smokey did not get along with a lot of people. I'd have a tendancy to say that the reason for him not being talked about for the HOF is that he really did not carre for the awards. He just wanted to work..........docrod
