Bikers in some cities have been battling the noise issue for years. It looks like they are now looking at cars too...at least in Las Vegas (like Vegas Metro doesn't have anything else to do.) Let me share with you what happened to my son last Friday night.
He has a 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS/SC. We recently installed a ARK cat back on it. Its a little louder than stock but definitely throatier. It is not louder than my HD FLHT and maybe just slightly louder than my V8 S10 Blazer. While pulling into the housing area Friday night around midnight a metro cop wrote him up for running a "modified exhaust!" My son showed him that it was a system that was legal in 50 states. He said that this wasn't an emissions issue, it was noise. I called my Pre-Paid legal lawyer today and he said that the city of Las Vegas just put on the books a law that basically says you can’t run an exhaust that’s louder than stock! It does not list any decibel limit. It just refers to the factory system. He called ARK and the guy told him that they are buckling down in CA as well. He has been stopped twice with his car and shows the cop the silencer that can be inserted into the tailpipe. Both times the cop told him to install it and let him go with out a ticket. My son had the silencer for his system in the garage when he was stopped. He goes to court 20 June. The fine could be as high as $190. No points since it's a non moving violation.
Bikers are facing the same issue in far north Scottsdale in an area called Cave Creek - seems a lot of the more wealthy citizens are objecting to the noise level. This is a popular place with bikers due to the shops, restaurants, scenery, etc. Unfortunately, those few that object are taking business away from the local merchants by the noise limitations. Guess what this means - reduced revenue will equate to higher taxes. Live and let live.
MODAWGS
I reported this on another thread. New law the SEMA Action Network is fighting www.semasan.org
The local cop now has, at his discretion, the power to cite for modified exhausts of any kind.
Modawgs, Cave Creek, isn't that right over by Buddy's Harley dealership?
Not sure if there is a Harley dealership there - if you go Scottsdale Road north until it ends, you are in Cave Creek - beautiful area with lots of winding roads and mountains - perfect for a bike - one of the great things about pipe mods, whether they are on a bike or a car is the resonance you hear off the surrounding area. Should not be spoiled by a stupid ordinance.
Well, my town has a hearing problem. There is a biker bar a mile plus down the street from my house and you can hear then start up and coming our way every friday/saturday nights. I like bikes too but they DON'T regulate bike exhaust noise here at all. Never could an SSR be that loud or even close.......... My .02 cents...

Listen to the thread of Mike in AZ pipes posted by Duane.
Motorcycles wouldn't need loud exhausts if drivers would get off the phone and look before they change lanes, exit, etc. The first mod we put on Boyce's fatboy before we even took delivery was pipes. Not because they sound cool (they do), but because of other drivers. I can't tell you how many times those pipes and our attention to other drivers has saved our lives. Unfortunately, if you ask 95% of drivers on the road how many bikes they passed on the way home from work, they would probably tell you 0.
Cars may not need the modified exhausts, but they sound great. And I can't wait til I can get mine! Just like NOT running a front license plate, that's one fine I won't mind paying.
What kind of exhaust are you going to install ? I was looking at the magna flow, for one reason of it being stainless steel . I've installed many flowmaster system but they will rust out over time. I know they offer a SS muffler .

As a buddy of mine has on his helmet.... LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!!
One can totally understand the problem. Some people are getting totally carried away and the sound levels are getting way to high. Also, I can understand the issue on the bikes on a freeway but what I have a problem with is the bikers lane splitting on Southern Ca. freeways which have narrow lanes and then expecting me to see them. There is hardly any room for error when driving on our Ca freeways.

I just wish the bikers would quit riding in my blind side area...and rapping the pipes as they go buy when I have the top down. Hurts the hearing! I do like the exhaust noise on many forms of engines but there is a limit on what sounds cool and what is a nuisance.

But lane splitting is legal, even the CHP does it.
For Nancy 24: that is because they do not pass bikes, ask howm any bikes passed them and you will get a different answer, due to lane splitting.
Motorcycles are licensed for the road too, give them a little extra space if you can. The thing that bothers me is the bicycles that think they cna use the left turn lane. Suicide wish if you ask me.

Is it a "fine only" situation???? Our regs make it a fine PLUS a need for an inspection that it has been returned to stock, or in the case of a front plate, inspection for the addition of the plate.
Had to put a front plate on mine. Must have been a slow night - got chased down with the lights flashing for this capital offence.

Well iam a biker with loud pipes so let the bikers alone ha ha.We just rack our pipes to be noticed from people on the phone day dreaming, eating, makeup, etc you get the pic as far as car well i think The Vegas police have way to much B.S. time as they are the highest crime rate city and i don't think thats from people running loud pipes there just drumming up free money from motorist what a shame. So bottom line is people with loud pipes keep them just be curtious to others and the police find something constructive to do with there donut time.LOL
Well the vegas police sure have it backwards we were at Circus circus for a week and my buddys Harley was stolen took 2hrs to fill out a police report. They also said we have had three stolen today so hey lets worry about real issues not loud pipes. When iam running down the highway i lean over here that pipe rumbling i know my Motor is humming talking to me if you know the feeling so good luck.Doug.
that sux ass... but hey is your son on cobatss.net? I know of at least one similar situation i herd on there (but there wasnt the BS law that it couldnt be luder then stock) and maybe he could help some

If this is true - I going to keep mine stock. That really sucks. Makes you wonder if they are doing for people who have had their mufflers modified years ago. My last truck had a after market muffler that had throat sound to it and now it is owned by a 16 year old. So far the rest of my friends have not been pulled over for such things but will double check with them all since they all have after market exhausts.

Thank you, Mr Accountant . . . I was afraid I was going to be FIRST!
As far as I am concerned . . . EXGTREMELY LOUD EXHAUST SYSTEMS, ESPECIALLY ON MOTORCYCLES AS WELL AS "BOOMING" MUSIC, IS OUT OF CONTROL. I am not referring to the "throaty" sound of a large V8 or the normal sound of music . . . I am referring to NOISE ABUSE.
I've heard that anal "noise makes motorcycles safer" excuse frequently but that doesn't justify the ridiculous noise levels of some vehicles.
Another point to consider, Noise vs Hearing Loss . . . once these clowns reach their "September Years" there will be a big boom in the Hearing Aid Industry.
What gets me is all these LOUD colors... I mean come on now, enough is enough. We should have an ordinance against loud colors like RED and PURPLE!! Everyone likes nice soft colors like Yellow or Blue or even Black is OK but it has to stop somewhere. I see these Red and Purple cars blaring their loudness indiscriminately all over the highway. The noise of an engine I can handle but where do these people get off thinking they can just paint their car any way they want. And don't even get me started about the two tones or more!!

Guilty as charged! And I'm not sorry! Ha!

As far as the noise goes, I can relate. I've been passed by some motorcycles that have no mufflers - simply wide open pipes. The db level was enough to cause pain, and that is simply unacceptable.
