Is it a "fine only" situation???? Our regs make it a fine PLUS a need for an inspection that it has been returned to stock, or in the case of a front plate, inspection for the addition of the plate.
Had to put a front plate on mine. Must have been a slow night - got chased down with the lights flashing for this capital offence.
It's a $190 ticket. I think my son will put the silencer in the back of the pipe and leave it in until he moves back east. It's a insert that ARK put in the box. He better not have to reinstall the factory one. I just hauled it to the dump. I think the cop referred to it as a fix it ticket.
My son just told me that last night his friend who has a Subaru with a "fart can" got the same type of ticket at the Rainbow and Sahara intersection of all places!! The cop came up to him and said that his exhaust noise was irritating. He said that they've been getting too many noise complaints in the area.
For those of you not familiar with that interesection its one of the busiest in Vegas and it's all commercial...who in the heck is going to complain!
If I get pulled over on my bike it will be real hard for me to keep my mouth shut.

I just wish the bikers would quit riding in my blind side area...and rapping the pipes as they go buy when I have the top down. Hurts the hearing! I do like the exhaust noise on many forms of engines but there is a limit on what sounds cool and what is a nuisance.
I'll admit...Drag pipes can be annoying....especially on the Shovelhead motor. It does hurt. I'm sure there will be a few at Laughlin this weekend.
Any biker that dwells in cagers blindspot is asking for trouble. I know two people who were cutoff because of that and I personally saw one of them go down. I make it a point to accelerate out of those areas and if I can't I back it down and try to see them in their rear view mirror.

What is so wrong with the tu-tones. We are not a large group so we don't make much noise. Although security has some complaints at work of some truck doing donuts in the parking lot.

lanesplitting....I rode bikes '65-'70 in sunny cal. I still watch my r/v for bikes coming up on me and pull left to give them passage. the sooner they are off the road, the better for them/us. after all, i used to be one of them..... saw CHP leading a pack of bides in LA in the 70's and picking up each bike he closed on and added them to the group leading them, where? ....lanesplitting... personally, i will give them some room. what else do i do in grid? may as well look in the r/v mirror and share, huh..... just my $.02... thanks...
No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and the original muffler shall comply with all of the requirements of this Code.

He has a 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS/SC. We recently installed a ARK cat back on it. Its a little louder than stock but definitely throatier. It is not louder than my HD FLHT and maybe just slightly louder than my V8 S10 Blazer. While pulling into the housing area Friday night around midnight a metro cop wrote him up for running a "modified exhaust!" My son showed him that it was a system that was legal in 50 states. He said that this wasn't an emissions issue, it was noise. I called my Pre-Paid legal lawyer today and he said that the city of Las Vegas just put on the books a law that basically says you can’t run an exhaust that’s louder than stock! It does not list any decibel limit. It just refers to the factory system. He called ARK and the guy told him that they are buckling down in CA as well. He has been stopped twice with his car and shows the cop the silencer that can be inserted into the tailpipe. Both times the cop told him to install it and let him go with out a ticket. My son had the silencer for his system in the garage when he was stopped. He goes to court 20 June. The fine could be as high as $190. No points since it's a non moving violation.
What makes the officer a specialist to determine weather or not that the exhaust has been modified ,unless he has been through an acredited school teaching him how to identify modified from stock he doesn't have a leg to stand on. What is the officer baseing his OPENION on a chrome tailpipe, it's his word against mine. I would fight it ; it's bogus they can't prove that it's not what came on the car by sound so the cannot pull you over unless you are violateing a noise level ordinance.CASE DISSMISSED!

There is hardly any room for error when driving on our Ca freeways.
This is'nt about sound level, it's about nonstock items on your vehicle. If we don't fight now when do we, United We Stand, Devided We Fall!
As a fellow cobalt ss/sc owner i think thats bs but personally i dont and never have like the sound ive herd from a v4. The stock sound is probably the best sounding v4 exhaust ive herd yet (sorry im biased from hearing v8s and ricer fart cannons) let us know what happens

I called the court yesteday and asked about it. They said that it wasn't in the system yet and I'd have to wait another week. He would need to see the ticket before he could answer my questions. I told him that it was a cat back exhaust and I was still running the cat. I told him that the current exhaust was not any louder, but it has throatier tone to it. He really didn't want to get into specifics until he saw the ticket. Later in the day a person told he that it was a fix it ticket and I would have to do "something." I'll post and update whne I call the court back.
I reported this on another thread. New law the SEMA Action Network is fighting www.semasan.org
The local cop now has, at his discretion, the power to cite for modified exhausts of any kind.
Modawgs, Cave Creek, isn't that right over by Buddy's Harley dealership?
Nope - Buddy Stubbs Harley is on Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, about fifteen miles south of the town of Cave Creek ( just down the street from Steve Kafka's shop, actually).
Cave Creek gets literally thousands of bikers up there these days. The speed is very closely monitored up there now, so unless bikers are running WOT there shouldn't be a problem.
The ticket finally showed up in the system. According to the person at the court house this is what my son has to do: Drive to a police station with the ticket. Show an officer that the exhaust noise is fixed. If he agrees he'll sign the ticket. Take the signed ticket to the court house and the fine is reduced to $20. Or he can plead not guilty and go to court.
I told him he should take the car as is and tell the cop that he had a louder muffler on when he was stopped and installed another. Then hope he agrees its not lound and signs it. Or he can install the silencer. The problem with it is it's a pain to fully install and even more difficult to remove. It goes in tailpipe and is held in by a bolt.
